Art at the Source 2017 Open Studios Tour
The annual event and open studios tour Art at the Source lets you visit artists in their studios in beautiful western Sonoma County, known for its charming towns, spectacular scenery, and great restaurants, as well as an abundance of creativity.
Nearly 120 artists in 78 locations open their studios to visitors during the first two weekends in June, Saturday and Sunday, June 3, 4, 10, and 11. See art in the making, casually browse around, ask questions, and perhaps find the perfect piece of art. Whether it’s as a gift or for your own collection, buying artwork directly from the artist makes it feel more personal and gives the piece greater value.
The 23rd annual Art at the Source, sponsored by Sebastopol Center for the Arts, gets you up close to the art and the artists. You’ll find paintings, printmaking, photography, sculpture, ceramics, woodworking, jewelry, glass, and fiber art. It’s a fabulous opportunity to see how and where artwork is made, and to talk to the artist about their inspiration and process.
Many artists will be offering free demonstrations in their studios where you can see and experience their work process first-hand, and learn about the materials and techniques they use. If you have ever wondered how fused glass is made, or wanted to know more about various painting techniques, or to see the tools and methods of printmaking, this is a great opportunity to observe, ask, learn, and get inspired.
The best way to begin is to visit the main preview exhibition at Sebastopol Center for the Arts where each of the 119 participating artists has a piece on display. Discover what kinds of things interest you, and pick up one of the beautiful catalogs. The catalog is loaded with information, including artist lists, schedules of demonstrations, and maps to guide you on a self-directed tour. Just follow the yellow signs to discover the art and discover the artists.
