Bodega Bay, Tippi Hedren Celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Hitchcock’s "The Birds"
Over this Labor Day Weekend (Sept. 1 – 2, 2013), Bodega Bay will be all about Alfred Hitchcock’s classic film The Birds as the town plays host to the B50 Festival, which marks the 50th anniversary of the film’s release.
As anyone familiar with the film will recall, The Birds was famously shot on location in the Sonoma County towns of Bodega and Bodega Bay.
Five decades after its release, many of the iconic original locations captured in the film remain standing and the B50 Festival will pay tribute to this fact by offering history buffs and Hitchcock enthusiasts alike a rare opportunity to visit those remaining original film locations.
Over the course of the festival, rare docent-led tours will take guests inside the historic Potter Schoolhouse, which is today a private residence and rarely open to the public, as well as the St. Teresa of Avila Church, the oldest continuously operated church in Sonoma County.
To kick things off, the film’s iconic star, Tippi Hedren, will be on hand for a special evening at The Inn at the Tides on Friday, Aug. 31. The one-night-only event will include a gourmet dinner and screening of the film with Hedren, who will also autograph memorabilia for diehard fans.
Sunday, Sept. 1 (5-9 p.m.) is an evening for adults only, with docent-led tours inside the schoolhouse and church. The festive evening also includes a special gourmet dinner and living history performance and costs $100.
Monday, Sept. 2, (10 a.m.-6 p.m.), the festival is free to attend; however the space-limited docent-led tours are $25 a person and take place at 10 a.m., 11 a.m., 1 p.m., and 2 p.m.
In addition to the aforementioned tours, included in the full day’s line-up activities are a parade of Tippi Hedren and Alfred Hitchcock look-alikes accompanied by the Hubbub Club marching band, food from local chefs, and wine and cheese tasting with live jazz. There will also be a local bird watching tour and a showing of local birds courtesy of the Bird Rescue.

All proceeds from B50 and the Kick-Off event will go to the Rancho Bodega Historical Society and the Bodega Land Trust, two worthy non-profit organizations which strive to preserve the history and open space of the Bodega area.
