Glamping on the Sonoma Coast

Combine glamorous luxury amenities with a wood-floored canvas tent cottage and what have you got? That’s right: glamorous camping, or “glamping.”

And beginning this spring, with reservations opening on May 1, outdoor lovers can go glamping at Stewarts Point on the gorgeous Sonoma Coast.

Located on a private ranch, the two luxurious canvas cottages perch on a coastal bluff and offer stunning views of the sea from queen-size beds outfitted with high-thread count Egyptian cotton sheets.

“You can hear the ocean all night long,” said manager Charles Richardson. “It’s a fabulous sound to sleep with.”

Each 12'x14' canvas “tent” is equipped with a wood-burning stove and locally sourced art and furniture (much of the latter made from the ranch’s wood). Battery-powered lanterns provide plenty of light (the tents have no electricity).

A very private outdoor shower, tucked from view, allows you to shower with an ocean view (it’s got on-demand hot water, too). An awning-covered front porch holds two rockers — perfect for sipping fresh-made French Press coffee while watching the morning come alive … or sipping a cocktail as the sun sets.

If you’re up for cooking, a fully-equipped outdoor kitchen includes a gas barbecue, an outdoor sink with hot water, and a full complement of plates, mugs, glasses, and utensils. At night, hang out in comfie Adirondack chairs around the fire pit, toasting s’mores and gazing seaward.

There’s plenty to do. Gualala, with restaurants, art galleries and great hiking beside the ocean, is a short distance to the north. Or drive south to Fort Ross State Historic Park, which includes an original structure and authentic reconstructions of a Russian fur trading outpost founded in 1812. Nearby are the side-by-side parks, Salt Point State Park and Kruse Rhododendron State Reserve, which offer an amazing array of activities.

Or you could just grab a picnic from the Stewarts Point Store, which owns the tent cottages, and kick back in camp while keeping an eye out for migrating whales and playful harbor seals. Relax, chill out and enjoy the finest luxury of all: time well spent. That’s what glamping is all about.
