Great Gatsby Gala at Buena Vista Winery July 1, 2017

Buena Vista Winery is California's oldest commercial winery.

Winery magnate Jean-Charles Boisset doesn’t do things in a small fashion. For his July 1 fundraiser for the Huntington’s Disease Society of America at Buena Vista Winery in Sonoma, he will be transforming the historic winery into a Roaring Twenties destination fit for the Great Gatsby himself.

Guests are encouraged to don Gatsby-themed attire, and live large as they soak up live entertainment, sparkling wine and champagne in the classically retro Bubble Lounge, a lavish wine paired dinner, and a silent auction of luxurious goods. The goal: to raise $100,000 to support the HDSA mission to improve the lives of those affected by Huntington’s disease, a fatal genetic disorder that causes the progressive breakdown of nerve cells in the brain.

Boisset will lead the evening’s 6 to 10 p.m. activities in his own famous Gatsby-esque style, alongside honored guest Dr. Laurice Yang, clinical assistant professor at Stanford University in the Neurology & Neurological Sciences department.

The nonprofit HDSA works to help the more than 30,000 people currently battling the disease across America, including Kim Aul. As she shares:

“A year and a half ago I was diagnosed with Huntington’s disease and my life changed forever. As my husband and I looked up the details, we found the disease to cause progressive brain damage, similar to Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, and ALS, that will render me unable to walk, talk, and reason. My progression started with mild swaying, imbalance, and twitching, and progressed over three months as I experienced violent whole body chorea (involuntary movement).”

Soon, she was able to stand for only 30 seconds or so at a time. Yet with Dr. Yang’s help and prescribed medication, Aul has dramatically improved. Today, she is working part time and walking two miles daily.

Marjorie Guthrie, the wife of legendary folk singer Woody Guthrie, founded HDSA in 1968. Woody died from complications of the disease in 1967 when he was only 55 years old, but the Guthrie family legacy lives on at HDSA to this day.
