IRONMAN 70.3 in Santa Rosa for 2017

Ironman in Sonoma County

This year Santa Rosa hosts two important triathlon races: the Ironman Vineman 70.3 on May 13 and the Ironman Vineman on July 29.

In the Ironman 70.3 (sometimes called a Half Ironman), the three traditional triathlon events — swimming, bicycling, and running — are half the distance of the full Ironman. Participants in a full Ironman cover a total of 140.6 miles while competing back-to-back in the three sports, while those in the Half Ironman cover exactly half that distance, or 70.3 miles.

As you can guess, anyone competing in either of these events must be in absolutely peak condition. It takes great dedication and long, hard training to be able to compete. Watching these superb male and female athletes cross the finish line is an inspiration, a reminder of the amazing feats that human beings can accomplish.

The backdrop for year’s Ironman 70.3 is Sonoma County’s gorgeous wine region, including the Russian River, Dry Creek, and Alexander valleys. Events start with a single-loop 1.2-mile swim in Lake Sonoma. Athletes then move to their bikes, tackling a 56-mile course through picturesque vineyards and charming small towns. Next, in Santa Rosa, the athletes run a half-marathon along the Santa Rosa Creek trail. They finish at the new Courthouse Square downtown, greeted by cheering crowds, proud friends and family, and — not least — lots of great food and wine.

To be at the center of events on race day, head to Ironman Village (50 Old Courthouse Road, Santa Rosa) on Saturday from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. You’ll find food vendors, exhibitors, bike shops, specialty services, and much more. The Village will also be open on the preceding Thursday and Friday.

Special VIP packages are also available, offering shuttles, tent access, and more. If you’re interested in volunteering, contact SantaRosa70.3@ironmanvolunteers.com.

General and relay registrations for race participation are sold out. However, registration is still being taken with an Ironman Foundation Community Fund Entry, as well as with the race’s official charity partner, Save the Children
