Popping the Question in Sonoma

The Inn at Occidental

Just as there are many ways to say “I do,” so are there any number of variations on how to pop the question of marriage to your spouse in Sonoma County. Not so long ago, in this very space, I revealed a few excellent options offered in Sonoma County options for popping the question. Now I’m updating that list with a few new ideas for lovers looking to tie the proverbial knot.

Inn at Occidental

Nestled cozily into the hills above the hamlet of Occidental, the Inn at Occidental delivers a perfectly romantic and secluded setting in which to pop the big question. Better still, the Inn offers a special “Romantic Proposal Package” that takes away a bit of the stress of proposing by putting together all the essential pieces necessary to a successful proposal.

Among other amenities, the Inn provides two (2) nights in a luxurious Courtyard Room with deck, fireplace, whirlpool Jacuzzi, king bed, romantic music, a dozen red roses, a bottle of Gloria Ferrer champagne, handmade truffles and a bed strewn with rose petals. You provide the bride or groom, the ring and the moving words that inspire your beloved to say ‘yes’. How lovely and easy is that?

The Romantic Proposal Package at the Inn at Occidental is priced at $868 (not including tax). Additional room nights are available for $339, plus tax.

Garden Valley Ranch, Petaluma

What is a proposal without flowers?

Here a bloom. There a bloom. Everywhere you look a bloom. That is the sentiment that perhaps best describes Garden Valley Ranch. A former cattle farm dating back to the 1880’s, the Ranch is now home to a whopping 10,000 rose bushes, comprised of over 60 varieties of natural and chemical free cut garden roses.

Counted among those rose bushes are English style, Hybrid Tea and special Spray roses (just to name a few) all of which are spread out like a blanket over some 4,000 acres in picturesque Petaluma. Few opportunities can offer more propitious prospects for a proposal than a gander among the rose fields that are the highlight of this stunning property, which is also home to gardens blooming with fragrant plants year around.

For an added dash of romance, the ranch also offers a cottage among the roses that is the ultimate escape (particularly as it is the only such rental on the property). The newly renovated 1880s bungalow comes complete with claw-foot bathtub, 10' ceilings, a gas fireplace, convenient mini-kitchen, cozy furnishings with a queen-sized bed and, perhaps most significantly, private access to the gardens under the cover of night. Think about it…the moon, the stars, acres of rose gardens…does it get anymore fairy tale perfect?

Terrapin Creek Café, Bodega Bay

While Bodega Bay is, in and of itself, a jewel box of unfettered romance, chic, unassuming eateries like the Michelin-starred Terrapin Creek Café are the gems that fill the box with the embarrassment of riches for which the seaside town has become known.

To be sure, Terrapin Creek Café is more intimate than it is fancy, but with the beauty of the Bay as a backdrop combined with the rambling charm of the surrounding coastal township, what could set a more auspicious scene for a proposal?

Moreover, the sophistication of the menu from a kitchen committed to using the highest quality local produce and meats in all of its dishes, is guaranteed to make the occasion of your proposal so memorable that you’ll want to repeat the experience again and again on an annual basis. After all, they don’t just give out those Michelin stars to just any old restaurant.
