Raise a Beer to Sonoma Summer 2017
However powerful the attraction, there is more to Sonoma County than just wine: Case in point, beer, or I should rather say, craft beer.
I know, I know … most folks come to Sonoma for the wine (and with good reason, as I have said on many occasions). But did you know that Sonoma County is home to more than two dozen craft breweries, a few of which have gained renown to more than match their sister wines in the region? Well, if you didn’t know before, now you do.
In honor of this revelation, or rather to give it its due respect, I’ve taken the liberty of assembling a brief list of a few of the beer events of summer, when lovers of beer and casual appreciators alike might opt to raise a frosty mug this summer.
On Saturday, Aug. 19, 2017, head over to Guerneville and the Monte Rio Beach for one of the most significant beer showdowns in all of Sonoma County. Unlimited sampling of more than 30 breweries is on the menu, as are the carnivorous culinary creations of more than 30 barbecue teams angling to be named the best ‘cue of the festival. Beer and barbecue? Talk about a perfect pairing. Oh, and did I mention that there’s live music as well? Yep, that too. $75 general admission, $10 shuttle bus. For more information, click here.
There is alwys a good reason to visit Petaluma and the upcoming Petaluma River Craft Beer Festival is but one. On Sept. 16, 2017, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. along the banks of the Petaluma River, purveyors of local craft brew will join forces with some of the Petaluma’s smartest eateries for an afternoon filled with beer and good times. An entry fee of $40 gets guests a souvenir mug, beer, food tastings, and live music. For more information, click here.
Considered by many to be the premiere event of its kind in Sonoma County, the 2017 Battles of the Brews took place a few months ago. It marked the 21st year of the People's Choice Main Event along with the return of two additions to the lineup — The Craft Cup, a judged specialty craft brew competition featuring a variety of premier microbreweries from around the country, and the Sonoma County Sandwich Showdown, highlighting the most delicious sandwiches from local chefs.
If you missed this year’s Battle of the Brews, don’t be dismayed. Take a look at this year’s list of winners, familiarize yourself with them over the next few months at your barbecues, cookouts, and other summer gatherings and mark your calendars for next year’s event which will be held on April 17, 2018 at Grace Pavilion, Sonoma County Fairgrounds, in Santa Rosa.
