The sole film of celebrated Indian dancer Uday Shankar (older brother of sitar virtuoso Ravi Shankar), Kalpana is a vibrant dance-drama that revolves around a young dancer’s dream of forming his own dance academy. Originally filmed in 1948, it was restored in 2008 by The Film Foundation’s World Cinema Project, founded by Martin Scorsese, at Cineteca di Bologna/L’Immagine Ritrovata in association with the family of Uday Shankar, the National Film Archive of India, and Dungarpur Films.

The film is presented at Schroeder Hall Friday, April 7, 2017, at 7:00 p.m. as part of a weekend celebrating Indian culture. Other activities include an International symposium entitled “The Evolution of Song and Dance in Hindi Cinema” Saturday, April 8 from 9:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m. and a performance and pre-concert lecture by Leela Dance, the world’s leading Kathak artists, Saturday, April 8, at 7:30 p.m. at Weill Hall. The symposium is free and open to the public; the pre-concert lecture is for concert ticket-holders only.
