Ryan Decker started as Rodney Strong’s Vineyard Specialist in 2006, helping to develop and implement the farming plan on all 12 of the estate vineyards. As the point person for the winery's sustainability program, Ryan guided the winery and vineyards through the California Certified Sustainable Winegrowing program that led to Rodney Strong Vineyards becoming one of the first Certified Sustainable wineries in the state. Ryan now oversees an extensive grower portfolio, and also directs operations on Jane’s Vineyard in the Russian River Valley.
Please join Ryan on October 23, for a Sunday vintner course covering the influence of soils on wine. Ryan will present samples of each soil the grapes are grown on from the Alexander Valley to the Petaluma Gap, while explaining the diversity and challenges that he faces. Discover how small changes in the physical and chemical attributes of a soil can make BIG changes in a wine. Take a step into the River East vineyard located at the winery to get a firsthand look of the soils while Ryan explains the varietals grown in the area.
The vintner talk will conclude on The Terrace with a tasting of several Rodney Strong wines from different regions in Sonoma County with significantly diverse soil areas. Taste for yourself how soil influences what is in your glass.
