Electric and inspiring, the main stage production of the 2016 Sonoma State University Spring Dance Concert features four original new works, live music, and a special collaboration with a Korean dance company. The dance spectacular, "Here" is a rare, creative fusion of identity and culture through Traditional Korean Dance, American Contemporary dance and live Indie-Rock music. "In the absence of" is choreographed by Kristen Daley in collaboration with eight SSU dance students and is a kinetic, vigorous, and emotional investigation around a group finding solace and safety in a physical and internal world that seems to be falling and drifting apart. "Cease" is a dance work that reflects on the tragedies of gun violence in this country and a dedication to honor those whose lives have been ended or torn apart by gun violence. "Modus," choreographed by visiting guest artist Eric Handman and featuring music by Alva Noto and Ryuichi Sakamoto, was created during a recent week-long dance residency at Sonoma State University. Opening night, April 1, is also "Friends and Family Night," when SSU faculty, staff and alumni are admitted free and standard, senior and visiting student tickets are only $5 per person. The performance at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 3 will be followed by a post show discussion with directors and guest choreographers. Performances are at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, April 1, Saturday, April 2, Wednesday, April 6, and Thursday, April 7, and at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 3. At 12 p.m. on Tuesday, April 5, there will be a special free performance of "Here" at Green Music Center, Weill Hall on the campus of Sonoma State University, followed by a post show discussion with directors, choreographers and guest artists.
