Travis Meinolf, Action Weaver, will teach you how to set up a small rigid-heddle backstrap loom and weave a piece of cloth in this workshop. After the class you can take home the cloth, take home the loom and keep creating! The backstrap loom is a simple tool for making cloth, for making connections. Once attached to a fixed point and strapped onto the body, it creates dynamic contact between the individual and the site, creating tension which can be used productively.
Travis will show you some simple plain weave patterns and tapestry techniques once you master the basics. Some techniques covered will be: stripes, tapestry, supplementary warp/weft, pile (rya and looped) and whatever ideas students bring in we can figure out!
Take interesting, textured yarn and a few balls of yarn to be the main filler material. Cotton warp thread will be provided. The loom is 8" wide and produces a scarf-width strip. Wider looms may be available for more advanced students.
Complimentary wine, tea and snacks will be served from 4 to 5 pm, for those who wish to stay and discuss techniques and results, or just socialize with fellow students.
