SONOMA COUNTY, CALIFORNIA — For the second time in three years, Sonoma County is taking home the Golden Bear award — best of show — for its display in the counties exhibit at the California State Fair.

A long-time feature at the fair, the exhibit showcases what each county has to offer. The Sonoma County booth also received a gold and best of division awards.

The theme of this year’s fair is Making Memories. The Sonoma County exhibit features video and animation, highlighting its rich agricultural heritage, and the display allows visitors to take selfies as if they were in Sonoma County. The fair is open until July 30.

Sonoma County’s design team was led by Tony Linegar, Sonoma County agricultural commissioner, and included staff from his office: Lisa Correia (now retired), Fernando Vasquez, Andrew Smith, and Sue Ostrom. Tina Luster, Sonoma County Tourism, was also on the design team.

The Richard Bay Puppet Theater Company created the booth, which was financed through Sonoma County’s Advertising and Promotions Program, with additional funds from Sonoma County Farm Bureau, Sonoma County Tourism, and Sonoma County Winegrowers.

“We are so excited to receive this award again,” Linegar said. “After winning in 2015, we didn’t expect to win again, but we have a great design team with Ag Department staff and Sonoma County Tourism, and a fantastic builder in Richard Bay who transforms our vision into a remarkable exhibit that really captures a sense of place, just as though you were in Sonoma County.”

Established in 1854, the California State Fair is celebrating its 50th anniversary at Cal Expo July 14-30.
