Armstrong Redwood State Park in Guerneville is one of Sonoma County’s great natural treasures. Redwoods used to be found along most coastlines thousands of years ago but now can only be found in Northern California. There are three rare great giants that can be found in this Natural Reserve. There is the widest of all trees, The Giant Sequoias (Sequoiadendron Giganteum), Dawn Redwoods of China (Metasequoia Glyptostroboides) now considered extinct due to logging in their homeland but found in Sonoma County, and the tallest of all, Coast Redwoods (Sequoia Sempervirens).
The park has wonderful features that can allow almost anyone the opportunity to enjoy a great day in the land of California’s giants. There is a trail designed for the sight impaired, that have guide ropes and Braille signs with fantastic ways to experience nature, allowing your other senses to explore this outdoor paradise.
A lot of the trails have been redesigned to protect the root systems of these massive trees, making the trails easier to explore so that families with strollers and individuals who need the use of wheelchairs or walkers can still venture out and be one with nature. Most of the maintenance and trail clean-up in the park is done by volunteers with the Stewarts of the Coast and Redwoods. The park with the help of volunteers and the Stewarts of the Coast and Redwoods has a few special events throughout the year:
Art in the Park, where you can sample different beers or wine while listening to music and buying art.
Old Grove Festival in the Forest Theater. It’s a day of music, celebration and a feast for all to enjoy.
