There’s a funny new phenomenon sweeping Wine Country, as Sonoma County wineries increasingly host top comedians for special performances. It’s a perfect pairing of fine wine, delicious nibbles, and laughter at locations like St. Anne’s Crossing in Kenwood, Deerfield Ranch in Sonoma Valley, and Buena Vista in Sonoma.

If you’ve ever dreamed of taking the stage yourself, there’s wonderful opportunity to try out your talent, with the November 16, 2019 “Macerate in Comedy Competition” being held at the Flamingo Resort in Santa Rosa. If you’re an amateur jokester with less than two years of stand-up performance under your belt, here’s your chance to tickle the funny bones of talent bookers, professional comedians, local celebrities, and the audience. They’ll all be judging the line-up based on originality of content, stage presence and overall performance, with prizes including two opening spots at a winery or other venue show, cash prizes, and bragging rights.

Amateur comedians can enter the competition here.

The competition and surrounding show calendar is the work of The Laugh Cellar, an arm of the Kenwood-based comedy production company Crushers of Comedy. Launched in the Sonoma Valley during the harvest/crush season of 2014, COC now produces live stand up comedy shows all throughout California. Owners Lisa and Carlee Pidge have helped introduce notable performers to the Sonoma County region, including Brent Pella, who has starred in shows like Funny or Die, Mashable, WorldStar HipHop, The Chive and more.

“Stand-up comedy is not an easy road, and starting out can be rough,” notes Lisa Pidge. “It takes a huge amount of courage to get up on stage and spill out your inner most hilarious thoughts.  Our goal is to provide a platform for new stand-up comedians to give it their all in front of a packed out audience. Plus, they can gain some valuable tips from the pros.”
