5 Sonoma Picnicking Spots for Summer 2017

Few activities capture the essence of summer more vividly than a picnic, particularly if that picnic happens to be held in a scenic corner of Sonoma County.

The views, the parks, and the settings on option for a most excellent picnic in Sonoma are numerous, but below are five cherry picked selections, all different in nature, that are among the best.

  •  The Russian River / Monte Rio: Near all things gay in nearby Guerneville, the point at which the banks of the Russian River sidle up to the charming village of Monte Rio provide an excellent picnic spot in Sonoma County. On one of the picture-perfect days that are common to this area, the more social tourist will find that this stretch of the Russian River is also an excellent place to meet up with and mingle with locals – and other tourists alike – in an extremely gay-friendly setting. (And best of all, when your picnic is done, there are all sorts of activities to fill the rest of your day. Hiking, kayaking, tubing … they are all at your disposal from this particular hotspot).
  • Armstrong Woods:  Engulf your picnic in nature by setting it among the towering Redwoods of Armstrong Redwoods State Natural Reserve. Also easily accessible from gay Guerneville, Armstrong Woods offers a more secluded and, dare I say, more intimate setting for your summer picnic. So, if for instance, your summer picnic includes Champagne, a sparkling piece of jewelry, and a certain big question, Armstrong Woods might be a solid choice for you.
  • Chateau St. Jean:  Originally built as a summer home in the early 1920s for Ernest and Maude Goff and their children, Chateau St. Jean is a stunning property built for luxuriant afternoons. Surrounded by a 250-acre estate and breathtaking formal gardens, the two-story, 3,550-square-foot historic home now plays host to reserve tastings as well as numerous private events. Members, however, are afforded the additional privilege of reserving the Wine Club picnic area for up to 16 guests with wine and small bites available for purchase so you don't even have to pack the picnic yourself.
  • Francis Ford Coppola Winery: The casual tourist in Sonoma County oft overlooks Geyserville, but that won't be the case for long as wineries like Francis Ford Coppola provide more and more reasons to visit this quaint corner of the county. For a more glam picnic experience, book a cabine at Francis Ford Coppola and enjoy a poolside picnic prepared by the winery's poolside café and served with those lovely Coppola wines (of course).
  • Sonoma Plaza / Healdsburg Plaza: Sonoma County is filled to overflowing with gorgeous plazas that just beg for a picnic. That said, why not marry a day of wine tasting and shopping in either of these majestic settings with a casual picnic prepared by local vendors to save time. Let Oakville Grocery or Healdsburg SHED prepare your picnic in Healdsburg or let the girl & the fig's Fig Rig make your preparations in Sonoma. See the town, enjoy its creations and explore all that it has to offer because that is what a sojourn in Sonoma County is all about.

Happy picnicking!
