Best of the Green Music Center’s Summer 2019 Lineup
The summer lineup for the Green Music Center in Rohnert Park was just released, and like last year, Sonoma County travelers and residents have a lot to look forward to. Enjoy dancing-in-your-seat jazz music, bluegrass favorites, craft beer, Sonoma County wines, and box office hits this summer when the Green Music Center opens up the back wall to their Weill Hall concert venue for Summer at the Green 2019, their seventh annual season of summer programming.
With a selection of free concerts and movies the whole family can enjoy and concerts starting at $25.00 for lawn seating, the Green Music Center is one of the most affordable ways to enjoy a night on the town in Sonoma County this summer.
Seating for everyone
Sit inside for an intimate concert-going experience or reserve a seat outside at a seated table, ideal for enjoying live music while dining with friends. Bring your own picnic (with picnic fare from Sonoma’s Frenchie Picnics and Provisions), low-back chairs, blankets, and jackets for lawn seating (craft beer and Sonoma wines will be available for purchase). For those looking to dine there, you can pre-order boxed meals of cheese platters, sandwiches, and a bottle of wine to pair with your picnic. A few shows this summer also have a pre-concert wine or beer party for an additional cost.
Double features for the whole family
Sonoma State is expanding their *free* Movies on the Green Series with double features of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and Captain Marvel on Saturday, June 29, How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World on Sunday, July 14, The Little Mermaid: 30th Anniversary and Aladdin on Saturday, August 10th, and ending with both Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame on Saturday, September 21. Tickets are not needed, but you can purchase a parking pass in advance to streamline your experience.
Starting off the summer with a bang
The 4th of July Fireworks Spectacular starts at 4:30pm (for the Kids’ Zone, complete with carnival games, bounce houses, face painting, and more) on Thursday, July 4th this year. Sonoma County’s own Transcendence Theatre Company joins the Santa Rosa Symphony in an evening of dynamite showtunes, patriotic classics, and fun. The biggest fireworks display in Sonoma County starts as the sun goes down.
Some of our top picks for the Summer at the Green 2019 lineup:
Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue
Thursday, July 11
From brass band blare and deep-groove funk to bluesy beauty and hip-hop/pop swagger, Troy “Trombone Shorty” Andrews delivers plenty of emotion – all anchored, of course, by stellar playing and the idea that, even in the toughest of times, as Andrews says, “Music brings unity.”
Providing support is the legendary Jon Cleary, a skillful tunesmith renowned around the globe as an accomplished keyboardist and guitarist and a deeply soulful vocalist. Grab a craft brew from Sonoma County brewer Seismic Brewing before the show. The tasting begins at 6 P.M. on the Prelude Wedding Lawn and runs until showtime. $15 in addition to your concert ticket.
Roberto Tapia en Concierto
Saturday, July 13
Roberto Tapia is one of the leading Norteño and “banda” music interpreters with a very special style, making him one of the most sought-after artists of his generation. His highly acclaimed album El Muchacho hit #1 on Billboard’s Latin Albums chart. Tickets available online.
Live from Here with Chris Thile
Saturday, July 20
This variety show features a unique blend of musical performances, comedy, and audience interaction. Musician and songwriter Chris Thile welcomes a wide range of well-known and up-and-coming talent to share the stage and create a beautiful listening experience. Take your concert experience to the next level with The Cartograph Journey – a private pre-concert wine exploration offered by presenting partner Cartograph Vineyards from Healdsburg – for only $20 in addition to your concert ticket.
Bluegrass Day feat. Steep Canyon Rangers
Sunday, July 21
This year, the Green Music Center’s Bluegrass Festival features the Grammy Award-winning Steep Canyon Rangers. Having spent nearly two decades shaping the bluegrass aesthetic, wedding it to elements of pop, country, and folk rock, their remarkably unique catalogue of original music links them to the past while also demonstrating their ambitious intent to bring string-based music into contemporary relevance.
Pair the Bluegrass Festival with the Craft Beer Fest! Featuring unlimited tastings of Northern California brews, the Craft Beer Fest will kick off at 12 P.M and go until 3:30 P.M. Only $30 in addition to your Bluegrass ticket.
Michael McDonald and Chaka Khan
Sunday, August 4
With a combined fifteen Grammy wins, Michael McDonald and Chaka Khan are two of the most distinctive voices of our time, and they will come together for an unforgettable double bill in Sonoma County. As one of the Doobie Brothers in the mid 70s, Michael McDonald penned some of their biggest hits, like “What a Fool Believes” and “Minute by Minute,” which led to a successful solo career from the eighties onward.
Joining him on stage, Chaka Khan has been hailed as a “one-of-a-kind premier vocalist” by the great Aretha Franklin. Khan began her career with funk pioneers Rufus, dominating the airwaves with hits including “Tell Me Something Good” and “Ain’t Nobody.” Before the show, join friends for the Sonoma-Cutrer Tasting Experience – a private pre-concert wine exploration with Russian River Valley’s Sonoma-Cutrer Vineyards – for only $20 in addition to your concert ticket.
Friday, September 6
American singer, songwriter, and record producer Andy Grammer has taken the music world by storm with several pop hits over the past eight years. His debut album featured the platinum singles “Keep Your Head Up” and “Fine By Me.” His most recent hit song “Don't Give Up On Me” is also the official theme song from the Five Feet Apart film soundtrack.
