Chill Out at a Classic Russian River Resort
Nestled between the redwoods is a classic russian river resort in the town of Guerneville known as the Woods Resort, a relaxed and rustic destination for generations of visitors seeking the perfect summer getaway. And its popularity has never waned – the river offers public beaches for sunning and swimming as well as kayaks, boats and canoes that invite fishing and exploration along the meandering waterways. Or you can opt for hiking under the canopy of towering redwoods at the Armstrong Redwoods State Natural Reserve. And then, of course, there’s always Russian River Valley wine tasting, and trips to the coast for some serious beach walks and picnics.
At the end of the day, however, you’ll want a place such as the Woods Resort to call home - somewhere central to your adventures and yet close enough to some activities that won’t require you to get in your car. Conveniently located right in town, the resort is within walking distance of beach, restaurants, shops, live music venues and a good size grocery for all the essentials you left at home. This resort has been a favorite for visitors for over 60 years, catering to families and couples with a classic configuration of cabins and rooms surrounding a lovely pool and grilling area.
The rooms range from simple cabin room with king size bed to cottage style accommodations that offer a full kitchen, dining area, living room and bedroom. All have high definition flat screen TVs for late night movie watching, mini or full size refrigerators, and microwave or gas stove. Some have gas fireplaces that add a touch of warmth to the space if you happen to be there in cooler months. Many of the larger units also offer a futon that can open out to a queen size bed to accommodate additional guests.
Every unit has outside seating, which isn’t unusual for a resort of this era, but what makes it all so unique are the multitude of plants lovingly cared for by Michael Preaseau. The Woods is a Mom-Son operation, and in this case the son, Michael, is an avid gardener. So you’ll find fruiting Bing cherry, apricot, nectarine and Asian pear trees outside your door… in addition to over 250 other plants, including at least 50 roses that line the walkways to rooms and the pool.
The Woods is perfectly positioned to host those who come for special events such as the Vineman races in summer, the Russian River Jazz & Blues Festival in fall or the Winter Winelands events in colder months. On the other hand, if slipping quietly into the more laid-back lifestyle of an old fashioned river town is more your speed, The Woods can accommodate that too. Walk to breakfast at Big Bottom Market and pick up biscuits or biscuit mix praised by Oprah for their southern authenticity. Spend the day on the river and head to the oddly named but locally famous Agriculture Public House for some of the most innovative and delicious local organic menus around.
