Dahlia & Sage Community Market Brings Fresh Flavors to Cloverdale

Dahlia & Sage Community Market's Cupcakes

The charming Sonoma County town of Cloverdale is making news lately for its burgeoning food scene with the opening of Trading Post restaurant and bakery this past winter, and now, Dahlia & Sage Community Market.

A dream project from husband and wife team Ryan and Tobi Smukler, the shop showcases organic grocery goods, prepared foods, and health products, all sourced from local farmers and artisans. It’s named for their two children, Dahlia and Sage, and inspired, the Smuklers say, by how they want to eat and live themselves.

Ryan has trained as a chef, so he also runs the kitchen here. A substantial deli and salad bar offer grab ‘n’ go homemade sushi, ramen, chicken in red sauce with refried black beans and rice, vegan acai bowls, bulgogi bowls, and a tri-tip sandwich fancied up with goat cheese and cilantro.

Some of the entrees are indeed restaurant quality, like a mouthwatering feta-olive-spinach stuffed chicken breast over lemon Israeli couscous and peas.

The breakfast frittatas are things of beauty, too, such as the Coastal Hill egg model, which is stocked with Niman Ranch bacon, Boont Corners Goat cheese, roasted potatoes, and more Niman Ranch bacon. Pair one with a smoothie crafted to order from Wine Country produce, and the day is off to a great start.

The in-house baker, meanwhile, crafts daily goodies like gluten free peach blackberry tarts, lemon curd and blueberry tarts, salted caramel chocolate and toffee cupcakes, and Paleo high protein low carb savory herb bread.

For groceries, grass fed beef comes from Marin Sun Farms and Niman Ranch, and it is butchered on premises. Ling cod is caught fresh off the Sonoma Coast. There’s cheese from Healdsburg’s own Cheevo, and flowers are harvested locally for brilliant bouquets.

Lucky Cloverdale, with happy shoppers and neighbors. As the Smukler slogan says, the shop’s mission is to “Cultivate Community Through Food & Nourishment.”
