Experiencing Ayurvedic Treatments at Dhyana Center
If you’re curious about Ayurvedic medicine, the Dhyana Center in downtown Sebastopol in western Sonoma County is the perfect place to learn and explore this ancient wellness system from India.
Located on Sebastopol’s Main Street, the Dhyana Center is a one-of-a-kind retreat space and school. With a focus on Ayurvedic based treatments, the Dhyana Center also features a unique “Self-Care Studio” with saunas, baths, a cold plunge, yoga classes, and a “mocktail bar,” plus they are an accredited school of Ayurvedic studies.
Ayurveda, which is Sanskrit for “life knowledge” is centered on a preventative approach to health that includes diet, herbs, and a variety of different body treatments that incorporate herbal oils, heat, and moisture as their base.
My experience at the Dhyana Center begins with the traditional Katti-basti or spine soak. This treatment helps to ground and balance your energy and put you in a deeply relaxed state. My practitioner started by placing a towel soaked in warm oil along my spine and then massaged the oil into my body at a brisk pace as it slowly poured out from the towel. Though the towel was cold at the beginning, the fast strokes and warmth of the oil quickly warmed me up.
After the Katti-basti I was scheduled to receive an Ayurvedic Deep Tissue Massage. Unlike a sports style deep tissue, the Ayurvedic deep tissue incorporates a lot of oil, fast paced strokes, and application of hot towels at varying times throughout the treatment. This style of massage helps to not only relieve muscle tension and pain, but also supports the lymph system, which is key to bodily immunity and maintaining a healthy system.
Following my Deep Tissue and Katti-basti, I felt so rejuvenated and deeply relaxed it was hard to leave the building. Luckily the mocktail bar was the perfect pace to transition back to the real world and enjoy a cooling drink while I browsed the variety of essential oils and other natural healthcare products available for purchase.
I’m looking forward to returning to experience their self-care studio and check out a yoga class to complete my Dhyana Center experience and explore more of Ayurvedic style wellness.
