The arts are a big deal all across Sonoma County, and the artists love to share their work in galleries, at fairs and festivals, and in highlight open studios where the public is invited to explore where the magic happens. For the SOFA ArtWalk August Open Studios being held over the first two weekends of August, the SOFA Santa Rosa Arts District welcomes with 19 artists opening their homes from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. all along South A Street (SouthOFA, get it?) at Sebastopol Avenue.

Gather your friends and family, and stroll the neighborhood, taking time to admire the Salon des Refusés gallery show in Mario Uribe's Seishin Studio. All gallery/studio admissions are free, and the artists will be on-hand to describe what inspires their work (plus sell some pieces, naturally).

While you’re there, refuel at the terrific locally owned Spinster Sisters restaurant and wine bar, Dierk’s Parkside Café, or Taqueria Las Palmas.

Then, plot out another neighborhood highlight: the annual WinterBlast each November, likened by its organizers to “the poor man’s Mardi Gras.” The celebration’s centerpiece of the celebration is a sofa (SOFA) parade, of course. Be your own artist, and create/decorate a sofa - it needs to be mobile but not gas-powered; most people throw the things on wheels and push them through the short parade route.
