Farmer Harvest Celebration in Sebastopol

The leaves are turning colors and the fall harvest is nearly in. What a wonderful time to acknowledge the bounty of the earth and to celebrate the farmers who work so intimately with her.

Sebastopol has its own unique style of celebrating, from creative farmer musicians and old time country music, to farm tours and even talks about sustainable food production.

The festivities start Saturday, November 9 from 5:00 – 10:00 p.m. with the Love Your Farmer Harvest Celebration at the Sebastopol Grange (6000 Sebastopol Ave.).

Food will provided by the chefs of the Green Grocer and Lata's Indian Cooking and will include an exotic harvest feast with pumpkin gnocchi, Indian curries and more. Beer will be provided by local Woodfour Brewery. There will be a selection of local wines as well.

The evening will be full of activities for the whole family (kids under 14 enter free). The eclectic music line-up is made up of the farmers themselves:

  • The Love Handles (Stuart from Stone Horse Farm
  • Cuyuy (Andean music from the band of Javier from Bodega Goat Cheese).

There will be classes on beer-making and bee-keeping, as well as guest speakers describing how Sebastopol is creating a local and sustainable food system, literally from the ground up:

  • Michelle Dubin and Tim Page of F.E.E.D. Sonoma: local produce distributors
  • Daniele Allion Strawn of C.A.F.F. (Community Alliance with Family Farmers: Farm to School program
  • Terry Garrett of Go Local: the economics of a healthy local food system

Tickets may be purchased by calling the Sebastopol Farmers' Marketat 522-9305. All proceeds benefit the Senior Coupon Program of the Sebastopol Farmer's Market.

For those who like to mosey while they celebrate, Farm Trails offers a free downloadable map of Sonoma County farms. In its mission to keep growers and eaters connected, the Farm Trails map includes family farms that welcome visitors. You can search by region in the County, or you can look up individual farms by name. The Farm Trails farmers even share their favorite recipes. Check out the Thanksgiving recipes from Green Goose Farm and SucherNova Farm: Butternut Squash Soup and Porchetta over Smashed Pumpkin. Yumm!

And toward the end of the month, for a classic, down home celebration of all things Ag, you can go to the Western Dinner Dance and Silent Auction to be held at the Sebastopol Holy Ghost Hall on Saturday November 23rd from 5:00 p.m. to Midnight.

Music will be provided by young country music prodigy, Buck Ford of the Buck Ford Pure Country Band. All proceeds benefit the Sebastopol Ag Boosters which raises funds for the local Future Farmers of America chapter. Email [email protected] for more information or call 707.666.9905.
