Fine Art as Gifts for the Holidays
The winter holiday season is a perfect time to visit art galleries with gift shopping in mind — and at this time of year many Sonoma County art centers and galleries showcase members’ work, small works exhibitions, and holiday shows. It’s an excellent opportunity to select unique and original fine art as affordable gifts.
Choosing a work of art for someone else is not quite the same as buying an espresso machine or an antique clock. So how do we select a work of art for someone else?
Here are some suggestions. Think about the receiver’s personal tastes and interests. Are they classic traditionalists, or kind of wild moderns? Do they like animals, perhaps horses or dogs, or maybe they’re outdoor enthusiasts and favor landscapes or vineyards.
Talk with the gallery staff for ideas and help with understanding the various media such as painting, printmaking, and photography, as well as sculpture forms. If you’re more comfortable with usable art consider handmade jewelry, pottery, or woven fabrics.
In any case, when buying art from a gallery exhibit, make sure you can pick up the piece in time for holiday giving. Lastly, don’t forget about gift certificates, which can be used toward buying a work of art, or even an art class.
