Fly into Sonoma Wine Country; case of wine flies home for free

Fly to STS - Sonoma County's Charles M. Schulz Airport

One of the best things about visiting Sonoma County is getting here. The drive from San Francisco Bay Area is stellar, but there’s something to be said about swooping in by plane and being stunned by the view of verdant rolling hills and vineyards that tease you out the window. Disembark and you can be at your first winery within 15 minutes of landing.

Alaska Airlines offers daily direct air service at the Charles M. Schulz – Sonoma County Airport (STS) from Los Angeles, Portland, Ore., San Diego, and Seattle. Add in locations covered by Alaska Air and its partners, Delta and American, means you’re only two plane rides away from Sonoma Wine Country.

Get into the Wine Country mood during the flight. You’re offered wine and beer on the flight for free (if you’re over 21, of course). Now, that’s the way to start your vacation.

Get your cameras ready as you leave the plane: Chances are you’ll see some “celebrities” in the lobby. Colorful statues of Charlie Brown, Lucy, and Snoopy decorate the lobby, reminding visitors that the Charles M. Schulz – Sonoma County Airport is named after long-time Santa Rosa resident Charles M. Schulz (creator of the “Peanuts” comic strip).

Check in at the information desk, fashioned on Lucy’s Psychiatric Help Booth, and pick up a Sonoma County Visitors Guide and Wine Map —no, they don’t cost 5¢ — for free. Better yet, get them before you come. That way, you’ll have something to read on the plane.

And, a few days later, once you’re done exploring Sonoma County, and tasting — and buying — wine, you can check up to a case of wine for free on your return flight. Wine needs to be properly packed to courier standards, find out details here.

A great offer from Alaska Airlines is that a case of wine is included as part of your free luggage allowance on flights originating from Sonoma County Airport.

You buy the wine, they'll ship it home for free! (Of course, you should have it packed to shipping standards.) More information on our Sonoma County "Wine Flies Free" page and on the Alaska Airlines website.
