Free Days this Summer at Jack London SHP

From  July through October, 1400-acre Jack London State Historic Park in Glen Ellen is waiving all fees one day each month. This means that, on free days, the entrance fee will be eliminated.

As if that weren't a good enough reason to get yourself off to the Park this summer, special events have been lined up for some of the free days. For example, on Aug. 12 there will be a fun presentation entitled 'Reptiles in the Park,' while Sept. 9 will feature 'Wild Birds Up Close.'

So put these Jack London SHP free days on your calendar:  July 8, Aug. 12, Sept. 9 and Oct. 14.

Of course, whether you come on a free day or not you'll always discover much to see and do at this multi-faceted destination.

The former ranch and home of famed novelist Jack London and his wife, Charmian, the Park's pleasures are diverse:

  • A National Historic Landmark, it's home to buildings rich with history. These include the simple cottage where Jack & Charmian lived, the House of Happy Walls museum, London's gravesite, the ruins of his magnificent mansion (Wolf House), and agricultural buildings at London's former 'Beauty Ranch' (including the famous 'Pig Palace').
  • Hiking trails are plentiful, ranging from easy to quite challenging (a steep uphill climb to the Sonoma Ridge Trail rewards you with awesome views).
  • There are several picnic areas or single tables in beautiful locations, free for public use. Large sites suitable for group picnics can be reserved for a fee.
  • Free Sunday morning guided hikes help people explore various aspects of the Park. Other free docent-led tours to Wolfe House and the gravesite, among other places,  occur at various times on weekends.
  • Many trails are open to equestrians, bicyclists and dogs on a leash.
  • Triple Creek Horse Outfit offers horseback rides through the Park.

On top of all this, the Park hosts an extraordinary number of events throughout the year. This summer alone will see Jack's Camp (for children); the Jack & Charmian Lecture Series; evening picnics with live music on Picnic 'til Sundown days, when visitors are encouraged to enjoy the Park as dusk arrives; and docent-led Twilight Hikes.

And then there is the glamour and excitement of Transcendence Theatre's Broadway Under the Stars concerts.

Imagine sitting in the open-air ruins of an ancient stone winery as dusk deepens into night and the stars come out, while before you — on a professional, albeit temporary, stage — Broadway and Hollywood performers dazzle you with talent …
