Fun for the Family at Jack London State Historic Park

Jack London State Historic Park in Kenwood

Family Fun Days—four events at Jack London State Historic Park that are geared to adventurous tots from pre-K through 2nd grade—is on the calendar this spring, summer and fall. Each event tackles a different theme, but they all inspire learning by combining natural science, art and sustainability.

Most events run from 10 a.m.-noon, so you might want to pack a picnic lunch and enjoy the park afterward. Children love exploring the historic farm buildings of the Park’s Beauty Ranch: the silos, barns and definitely the famous Pig Palace. On Saturdays you can also take a free 1:30 p.m. guided tour of the Beauty Ranch—no reservations required.

Participation in Family Fun Days is free, but a park entry fee of $10 per vehicle is payable at the gate (members enter free).

Here’s the lineup:

April 8—Nature’s Recyclers (Saturday): Kids will get a close look at Nature’s own recycling system and learn how humans can reduce, reuse, and recycle too. A 45-minute nature walk leaves the meadow at 10 a.m. and ends with fun activity stations that use recycled materials to play games and make crafts.

June 10—Talons and Trails (Saturday): Children will explore the unique body structures and behaviors that help birds survive and thrive in the wild. They’ll also meet real live raptors up close at an exciting presentation by the experts of the Santa Rosa Bird Rescue Center. Afterward, the group will take a walk to the Wolf House Ruins, investigating birds in the forest and playing learning games. Meet at the House of Happy Walls Museum.

August 12—Nature’s Palette (Saturday): Kids will enjoy a fun look at the roles of color and pattern in the plant and animal kingdoms. Through trail activities and fun games, they’ll learn about this science on a nature walk. Following this, they’ll create watercolor paintings in an outdoor art studio. Meet in Beauty Ranch.

October 14—Fall in the Forest (Saturday): Children will explore how animals use their five senses to survive the seasonal changes from fall to winter. A Nature walk departs at 10 a.m. and ends with craft and activity stations in the meadow. Meet in Beauty Ranch.
