Gay Happenings: Sonoma Summer 2015
Even though Sonoma County Pride 2015 has already been logged into the annals of history, there is still a rainbow-filled summer of fun to be had in almost every corner of Sonoma.
In fact, the summer social calendar in Sonoma County is bursting to overflowing with events. A wine tasting here, a pairing dinner there, music festivals all around, and more than a few great annual fundraisers that mix food, wine and fun in that cultivated and casual manner that is Sonoma’s signature. With the good times ahead in mind, here are a few of the gayest events on the summer 2015 line-up:
June 19 – 21, 2015, Gay Wine Weekend
Not only is this the world’s largest gay wine weekend event promising three rip-roaring days filled with LGBT events all around the stunning Sonoma Valley, it may well be the gayest weekend of summer of Sonoma.
Sample world class wine and culinary delights, groove to dance music in a private estate vineyard, tuck into VIP Receptions and wine tasting excursions, indulge in passport wine tasting, champagne brunch, a wine auction, pool party and so much more in a weekend of gaiety that rivals a pride celebration (only chicer). The annual T-Dance on Saturday, June 20 is a particular highlight.
June 19 – Sept. 13, 2015, Broadway Under The Stars
Broadway Under The Stars provides a dazzling showcase at which an annual parade of Broadway and Hollywood stars famously deliver goose bump-inducing performances from theatrical spectacles that have won rave reviews around the globe.
In fact, in this season alone, the entertainment program includes Broadway performers from the shows Wicked, Mamma Mia, Hairspray, Phantom of the Opera, West Side Story, Chorus Line, 42nd Street, and Mary Poppins, among notable others.
Begin paying your respects to the Great White Way with “Oh What A Night!,” which debuts on June 19 and runs through July 3. It offers standards and showstoppers — the best of Broadway on a single stage.
For one weekend only, July 17-18, enjoy the Fantastical Family Night. Now a summer tradition, there are performances by members of the Transcendence Kids Camp and the show features music from Broadway and Disney.
The final show, Rhythm of Life, will be Aug. 7-23. This dynamic mix of electrifying dance beats and harmonies that weave magical sounds fill the evening with happy sounds. Celebrate life at this inspirational performance.
And be sure to save the date for the Transcendance Theatre’s Gala Celebration events slated for Sept. 11 – 13.
July 29 – Aug. 3, 2015, Lazy Bear Weekend 19
Things get more than a little hairy around late summer when the bears return en masse to Guerneville, the gay capitol of Sonoma County.
Celebrating its 19th anniversary this year, Lazy Bear Weekend 2015 promises to be bigger, hairier, beefier, burlier, crazier, and lazier than any previous edition of the annual fundraising event, which will once again serve up a five-day extravaganza of events. There will be DJs, pool parties ranging from mild to not-so-mild to downright wild at local gay Guerneville favorites including The Highlands Resort and The Woods and ample opportunity for lots of outdoor activities on and around the banks of the Russian River.
Finally, though not exclusively LGBT specific, be sure to mark your calendars for the Tuesdays in the Plaza, and Rodney Strong Concert Series in Healdsburg (featuring Kenny G – June 28 and Kenny Loggins on July 25, among others), the weekly Barlow Street Fair in Sebastopol, and the Green Music Center's acclaimed summer concerts.
Here’s to summer!
