Gay Wine Weekend 2018: What You Need to Know
Sonoma County’s Gay Wine Weekend has been hailed as the world’s largest event of its kind and lauded as one of the best LGBT events on the planet bar none. And there’s a very good reason why — the originality, authenticity, and genuine heart the event’s producer, Sonoma-based event and travel company Out in the Vineyard, puts into planning this highly anticipated annual event.
“Guests who come to Gay Wine Weekend are a combination of food and wine lovers in addition to first timers who want to learn more about wine — and what more fun way to do that than with your community,” says Out in the Vineyard Co-Founder, Gary Saperstein.
“We created Gay Wine Weekend as we saw an opportunity to open up to the wine industry to the huge influx of LGBT Travelers to Wine Country,” Saperstein continues. “When the weekend ends people have made new friends and have an appreciation for the region.”
This year, Gay Wine Weekend, the LGBT oenophile’s mecca, returns to Sonoma July 20-22. Festivities officially kick off on July 22 with a VIP welcome reception and wine tasting from 3-6 p.m. for VIP Pass holders as well as Gay Wine Weekend guests staying at the event’s host hotel, The Lodge at Sonoma Renaissance Resort & Spa.
After the welcome reception, Gay Wine Weekend guests will be invited to wine and dine out in Sonoma at a range of intimate and exclusive winemaker dinners, where some of wine country’s most talented winemakers (many of whom are part of the LGBT community) perfectly pair the wines of various estates with mouthwatering creations from some of Sonoma’s most celebrated chefs and eateries. Always a highlight of Gay Wine Weekend, tickets to each of these dinners can be purchased individually — just be sure not to wait until the last minute because these very special dinners often sell out fast.
To wind down (or some might say wind up) the weekend’s first evening, all are welcome to head down to a pop-up video gay bar on Sonoma's legendary square for an evening of fun and camaraderie.
On day two of Gay Wine Weekend, explore the many flavors of Sonoma vis-à-vis Out in the Vineyard’s exclusive wine tasting tours to some of the best producers in Sonoma. Departing from host hotel, guests will venture out into the vineyards for intimate wine tastings at amazing wineries and a box lunch.
The three-day event then reaches its crescendo with the highlight of the weekend — a Twilight T-Dance at the iconic 1920s Chateau St. Jean Winery tucked away in the heart of the stunning Sonoma Valley. Expect to sip award-winning wines alongside culinary delights, while dancing the night away.
Finally, on July 22, the weekend draws to a close with what is appropriately billed as a Gay Wine Auction & Recovery Brunch, followed by a Sunday Pool Soiree, held at fabulous private home.
