Great Wedding Cakes in Sonoma County
The perfect Wine Country wedding requires the perfect wedding cake. Fortunately, Sonoma County boasts many superb bakeries. These are boutique affairs, with the owners on-site, creating each cake and often personally manning the stoves.
If you crave chocolate, you can get locally made chocolate. Strawberry cakes can be finished with seasonal, fresh, local strawberries, and lemon cakes can be made with local Meyer lemons.
Creative decorating options with local flair are nearly endless, too, thanks to the Sonoma County region’s abundance of beautiful flowers, pretty leaves (think grape leaf trim), berries, citrus, and even vegetables adding a dramatic touch.
And here’s a fact, just for fun: The largest cake ever to be created weighed 58.08 tons (128,238 pounds, 8 ounces), including 7.35 tons (16,209 pounds) of icing. It was made to celebrate the 100th birthday of Fort Payne, Alabama.
Patisserie Angelica, Sebastopol
Hidden away behind the Barlow, this artisanal shop fashions fantastic cakes built from an array of French, Belgian, Swiss, and artisan chocolates, organic sweet cream butter, organic eggs, and organic dairy. Recipes include all-organic sugars, and organic all-purpose unbleached flour from Central Milling, with a focus on using Sonoma County products in peak season. Owners Condra Easley and Deborah Morris specialize in four-layer cakes with three fillings for the most delectable flavors, and thrill with intriguing combinations like Chocolate Beet Cake with chocolate buttercream and chocolate fudge. A wedding cake can be gluten-free, too, such as Flourless Chocolate Cake with raspberry chocolate fudge.

Costeaux French Bakery, Healdsburg
A Healdsburg institution since 1923, this European-style bakery specializes in sourdough, rustic batards, and sweet French bread, plus crunchy-crust ciabatta, multigrain loaves fermented with a touch of molasses, and many other recipes that take 24 to 48 hours to craft. Don’t miss the gorgeous sweets, either – graceful fondant cakes finished in buttercream swirls and chocolate flowers, seasonal fruit tarts, gooey éclairs, cookies, and house-made candies. Their wedding cakes are true works of art, so meticulously designed that bakery staff insist on delivering and setting up each cake “just so.”

Cake designer Jill Habansky takes a slow food approach to cake creations, showcasing locally sourced flavors and flowers.
Designs tend to be contemporary and minimalist, fashioned into box shapes as well as rounds, and studded with simple, elegant blossoms, sprigs, and berry branches. Rather than operating a physical store, Habansky offers personal consultations for each custom cake.

Forget Me Not Cakes, Petaluma
This commercially licensed kitchen doesn't have a retail storefront, so wedding couples should call for a consultation appointment or attend one of the monthly Open House Tastings. Luxury, custom-designed cakes are baked from scratch, with all-natural ingredients, locally sourced organic eggs and dairy, local fruit, and sugars, flours, and chocolates that often are produced in Sonoma County. All cake recipes can be had gluten-free, too. Note that the boutique operation is indeed tiny, and so popular that it’s best to reserve your cake about six months before your wedding. Another delightful option is the cupcake bar, including a smaller sweetheart cake for the happy couple.

Supreme Sweets, Petaluma
Owner and confectionery artist Christina Danner says she aims “to make spectacular, one-of-a-kind designer desserts that wow everyone, every time.” To that end, she loves to come up with creative flavors, including salted caramel, cookies & cream, PB&J, chocolate and peanut butter, tres leches, and strawberry shortcake. Custom flavors are another specialty, for whatever a wedding couple prefers, from chocolate to champagne. Danner has even created his-and-hers wedding cakes decorated as the couple wished – one with an American Gothic farm theme, and another with a dragon theme.
