Healdsburg Veterans Memorial Beach Park
On those hot summer days with clear and untroubled skies, do you ever feel like hanging out on a calm and sandy beach? Slowly paddling a canoe or kayak? Wading into cool river water? Of course you do! That’s why you start making plans for a getaway to Veterans Memorial Beach.
Located in Healdsburg, this public swimming beach brings back your fondest childhood memories of summer. Right on the banks of the Russian River, it offers a forest-filled view decorated by the erector-set-looking Healdsburg Memorial Bridge. Constructed in 1921 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the bridge is one of only 13 “Pennsylvania truss” bridges in the nation that still carry auto traffic.
Adjacent to the beach is the Healdsburg Veterans Memorial Park. Complete with picnic tables, restrooms, showers and a playground, it’s managed by the Sonoma County Parks Department.
A beach wheelchair is available upon request. Be sure to bring a picnic to enjoy in this delightful spot. A swimming area is roped off and, during the summer season, protected by alert lifeguards. Waters in the roped-off area are shallow near shore, making it a perfect spot to teach tiny tots how to swim … or at least splash around in the serene water.
Swimmers are allowed to go beyond the ropes to the deeper water (which isn’t really all that deep) if lifeguards are present. The swimming area is usually available to the public for wading beginning on Memorial Day Weekend. Swimming begins July 1, and closes after Labor Day Weekend.
River’s Edge Kayak and Canoe is located nearby, offering self-guided river trips as well as half- and full-day rentals. Russian River Adventures offers half- and full-day dog-friendly trips leaving from Memorial Beach in SOAR inflatable canoes.
