Hitchcocks The Birds Marks 50th Anniversary in Bodega Bay

Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds

Back in the ’60s, who would have thought a film about a lovesick San Francisco socialite who bravely ventures outside the city limits and over into Sonoma County only to find herself attacked by a vicious swarm of birds, would still be making waves in the new millennium?

Probably not many, but the success of The Birds speaks to the enduring appeal of Hollywood and its product. Every once in a while an iconic project pops out of the Tinseltown mill and manages to somehow stand the test of time. And The Birds is one such project.

If you loved Hitchcock’s 1963 classic The Birds starring Tippi Hedren, then you’ll be excited to know that you can mark the 50th anniversary of the film this month by viewing it again on location in Bodega Bay, which, for those who might have missed this little detail, is where the film was infamously lensed five decades ago.

To celebrate this milestone in the life of The Birds, which is currently enjoying something of a renaissance thanks to The Girl, HBO’s behind-the-scenes look at the making of the film and the tumultuous relationship between the director and the film’s star, the Bodega Bay Area Chamber of Commerce is presenting not one, but three special screenings of The Birds on Saturday, March 23, at noon, 3:30 p.m., and 7 p.m., at Bodega Bay Grange, 1370 Bodega Ave., Bodega Bay.

For an added element of fun, prizes will be awarded for the Best Tippi and Best Hitchcock at the 7 p.m. screening, so get your costumes and British accents ready for a chance to win.

And do arrive to explore the town, as well as nearby Bodega (yes, two separate towns — Bodega and Bodega Bay). In Bodega, roll by the Potter School and St. Theresa’s Church (both of which appear in the film). Then, head over to Bodega Bay to see the Tides Wharf, also featured in the movie, before sitting down for a fresh screening of the film. After all, if you’re going to watch the film on location, you might as well see the location, right?
