New J’s Grill and Cafe in Santa Rosa
J’s Grill & Café opens in the St. Francis Shopping Center at Calistoga Road and Sonoma Highway. It’s an all-American operation from “J” - James Horton – and it’s long been his dream.
Horton, a 27-year military vet injured in Iraq, trained at the Culinary Institute of America at Greystone but is keeping things simple to start. Think means rib-stickers through breakfast and lunch, like ham and eggs, half-pound burgers, and chef salad.
But some dishes have twists, too, like the three egg scramble made with farmer’s sausage, house potatoes, mozzarella cheese, country gravy, or a whole wheat English muffin topped with poached eggs on top a bed of zucchini, tomato, basil, garlic, and shallots, drizzled with balsamic vinegar and topped with fresh grated Parmesan.
At lunch, there’s also a triple-decker ham and cheese sandwich on sourdough that’s dipped in egg and griddled, or lemon shrimp basil pasta.
Daily specials are a particular point of pride, such as banana pancakes, or a 12-ounce hamburger steak smothered in home made chili with mashed potatoes and veggies.
If it seems like J’s caters to hearty appetites, it does. But there’s an entire menu dedicated to “healthy choice” options, too, listing every detail. A lemon chicken pita burger, for example, brings spiced yogurt sauce in whole wheat pita with shredded lettuce and tomato for 426 cal, 14g fat, 3.4g sat, 6.3g mono, 28.9g protein, 46.4 g carbo, 3.3g fiber, 77 mg Cholesterol, 776 mg sodium and137 mg calcium.
Horton and his wife Tiffani Horton also hope to support the community that supports their cozy café. Part of the restaurant proceeds go to support local groups such as families of fallen soldiers, Autism awareness, Alzheimer’s research, and Sonoma County’s Vet Connect, a non-profit group of veterans helping other veterans adjust to life, housing and benefits bureaucracy after their service.
