The Santa Rosa Marathon is Happening on Aug 24

Sonoma County’s Santa Rosa Marathon is amazing, because it really does have something for everybody. As a Boston Marathon qualifying race, you better believe that participation is a serious undertaking.

But there’s also a race for half-marathon runners, as well as for 5K runners. And those who just want to come and celebrate later in the day are welcome at the Beer Festival (for a fee, of course). All marathon events will be held on Sunday, Aug. 24, 2014.

There’s also a related free Health & Fitness Expo on Friday, Aug. 22 (3-7 p.m.) and Saturday, Aug. 23 (10 a.m.-6 p.m.), which features national and local vendors and running-related organizations. The location is at one of the marathon’s sponsors, DeLoach Vineyards (1791 Olivet Road, Santa Rosa 95401). It’s a particularly lovely winery with extensive gardens.

Full Marathon: The full marathon stars at 6 a.m. in Santa Rosa’s Juilliard Park, winds through downtown for 2.5 miles, and then along Prince Memorial Greenway along Santa Rosa Creek for 5.5 miles. After this comes a 12-mile loop through rural Sonoma County (including a sprint right through the wine barrel room at DeLoach Winery). At mile 20.3 the race enters the northern Greenway path and returns to Juilliard Park and the finish line. The scenery through most of the marathon is beautiful, but what do you expect? It’s in Sonoma County! Registration Fee: $135. Download the map.

Half Marathon:  The half marathon starts at 7 a.m, winds through downtown, and then heads out and back along the bucolic Prince Memorial Greenway. Registration Fee: $120. Download the map.

5K Race: The 5K race starts at 8 a.m. and runs through downtown Santa Rosa. All finishers in this race get a custom wicking shirt. Advance Registration fee: $40 for adults; $15 for children 16 and under. Download the map.

The Beer Festival (11 a.m.-3 p.m.) at Juilliard Park is sponsored by the Coddingtown Whole Foods Market. Twenty-five or more breweries will be on hand, along with local food vendors, a tap room of specialty beers, and more. All runners receive two free tastings in the beer garden, and can upgrade for $20 to get unlimited tastings. For non-runners, the price is $45 and includes unlimited beer tastings. You can see the lineup of breweries here.

Race sponsors include DeLoach Vineyards, Northbay Motorsport, Blood Centers of the Pacific, Kaiser Permanente, Lola’s Market, Santa Rosa Treatment Program, Heart & Sole Sports, Juice Shack, Lululemon Athletica, Fusion Fitness, PowerBar, Whole Foods Market/Santa Rosa, Lagunitas Brewing, Coldwater Creek/The Spa, Mariani Premium Dried Fruit and Somersaults.

Way to go, folks!
