Shopping at Sonoma Flower Mart in Sebastopol
You can shop for flowers in Sonoma County in the best possible way — surrounded with dazzling bunches of fresh, locally-grown blooms sold directly to you by the people who grew them. All that, and more, is yours at the Sonoma Flower Mart.
Located in The Barlow culinary and artisan center in Sebastopol, the Sonoma Flower Mart is a wholesale and retail flower market offering high quality, locally-grown, in-season and freshly-cut flowers, greens, and large branches. Small local flower farmers set up stalls here two days a week, selling their products directly to buyers.
“We carry flowers that are good for us, good for the environment, and good for the people who grow, pick, and design them,” said Jessica Hole, the Mart’s manager. “These flowers are grown locally and responsibly. By shopping at the Sonoma Flower Mart, you’re keeping jobs in our community, supporting family farms, stimulating the domestic economy, and supporting biodiversity of our local ecology.”
Not to mention, the flowers are gorgeous — and you’ll find many unusual or delicate varieties not typically grown by large commercial producers. The blooms’ natural scents are fantastic because they haven’t been bred out in favor of another trait such as heartiness — imperative for flowers that must travel long distances. And, since the flowers are cut no longer than two days before appearing at the Mart, they’re quite fresh.
Sonoma Flower Mart currently has three individual booths, used by Front Porch Farm in Healdsburg, Oak Hill Farm in Sonoma, and Serenity Farm in Sebastopol. There is also a collaborative booth shared by Full Bloom Farm in Graton, Jolee Blooms in Occidental, and B-Side Farm of Sebastopol.
In addition, the Mart stocks products from Aztec Dahlias, Garden Valley Ranch, and Neve Brothers Roses (Petaluma); Strong Arm Farm and Chalk Hill Clematis Farm (Healdsburg); and Sebastopol’s Green Valley Growers. The Mart occasionally brings in other products, including proteas from Jenner, lotus pods from north of Sebastopol, marigolds from Occidental, and more.
As for pricing, expect to pay about $24 wholesale or $33 retail for a dozen locally-grown garden or greenhouse roses; a 10-stem bunch of field flowers might cost around $7 wholesale and $12 retail.
“The Mart is a warm, fun, welcoming atmosphere,” said Jessica Hole, “with people who are passionate about community, sustainability, wild and cultivated beauty. Grab a drink at Taylor Maid Cafe and leave with an armful of flowers that you can feel great about.”
The Sonoma Flower Mart is open Wednesdays and Thursdays from 7 a.m.-1 p.m. Retail shoppers are welcomed. To receive wholesale pricing, you’ll need a No Sales Tax Badge or Taxable Badge, which can be purchased online with a copy of your Business License or Resale Certificate.
