Sonoma County Dines Out for Life November 30, 2017
What if you could savor an excellent Sonoma County restaurant lunch or dinner, and know that up to 50 percent of your bill would go to providing nutritious meals to a fine, medical charity?
That’s the joy of Dining Out For Life, a co-op event being held at nearly 90 Wine Country restaurants on Nov. 30, 2017. All that Thursday, some 90 Sonoma County restaurants will donate 25 to 50 percent of all meal purchases to the non-profit Food For Thought’s food bank.
As Dining Out For Life events manager Mary Bigelow-Gale notes, this may be the “most satisfying meal you’ll have all year.”
The Forestville-based Food For Thought provides healthy food and compassion to Sonoma County people living with HIV and other serious illnesses. That means free weekly groceries, nutrition education, congregate support lunches, and fresh produce from FFT’s own organic gardens.
All clients also can enjoy free vitamins, dietary supplements, and custom nutritional counseling, while people who are homebound because of illness or lack of transportation can have groceries delivered to their door. Clients unable to prepare food for themselves can receive frozen prepared meals.
More than 800 clients currently rely on FFT, with 600 volunteers helping keep the organization running by preparing meals, stocking groceries, delivering food, and lending a friendly face.
Called “the hippest food bank around” by the New York Times, the organization acts as an entire Wine Country community, as well. Founded in 1998 with a single grocery donation by Guerneville resident Betsy Van Dyke to help a neighbor with AIDS, it has grown into a grassroots phenomenon.
Today, the food bank is still located along the Russian River, surrounded by organic gardens, and in solar-powered facility with a grocery store-style set-up.
For this very important fundraiser, restaurants all across Sonoma County are pitching in, offering every kind of cuisine from coastal seafood to Thai, Italian, Mexican, Japanese, Chinese, California, and classic American. Choices range from upscale, such as Bodega Bay’s Bay View Restaurant at The Inn at the Tides or Barndiva in Healdsburg, to casual, like Graton’s Willow Wood Market Café or Santa Rosa’s Bibi's Burger Bar.
