Storybook Charm at Avalon Bed and Breakfast
The Avalon Bed & Breakfast in Sebastopol has a storybook charm like no other. Imagine being fortunate enough to have friends who live in wine country – specifically in a charming English Tudor-style home nestled deep in a forest of towering redwoods, oak, madrone and fragrant bay. Now picture those friends inviting you to visit, then setting out to make sure you felt completely relaxed and delightfully pampered during your stay. That’s the experience Avalon Bed & Breakfast aims for and, happily, accomplishes with grace and warmth.
Each of the three guest rooms offer private entrances, a sitting area with cozy chairs or sofa in front of a fireplace, a luxuriously plush king size bed and spacious, decorator bath. In addition, each room also features either a private hot tub, Juliet balconies or steam room. And while you won’t find a TV, you will find acres of woodlands to walk through, a public hot tub to soak in and gardens to admire. The owner, Hilary McCalla, has also thoughtfully created quiet pathways through the woods, providing benches or cafe chairs and tables in secluded spots. You’ll find them situated near the banks of the gentle Purrington Creek, hidden under bowers of leafy branches or positioned on the hillside for optimum nighttime star gazing.
And since the owner, her husband and son have lived here for over 17 years, you can count on them to help you discover some of the hidden gems of Sonoma County vacationing that only the locals would know. It helps that they’re less than a half hour drive from the ocean, charming rural towns (including downtown Sebastopol) and award-winning wineries. You can pack a picnic lunch with creative artisan cheeses from the Bohemian Creamery and a bottle of wine from neighboring Marimar Estate Winery. And when you’re ready for dinner, consider a quick drive to Underwood Bar & Bistro in the tiny town of Graton.
Speaking of food – Avalon, of course, offers a full breakfast with your room. By breakfast I mean a creatively inspired, fresh, seasonal and organic meal that will keep you satisfied well into the afternoon. I watched Hilary work in her open country kitchen, whipping up blue corn muffins full of plump white corn kernels, an in-season fruit bowl, and a south-of-the-border inspired soufflé accompanied by a drizzle of sour cream sauce, homemade guacamole and freshly chopped salsa. The day before I managed to wolf down not one, but two, house-made cookies with my afternoon tea… then returned for creamy and garlicky hummus, sweet black bean dip and crackers with my wine at 5. As an aside, I also discovered while chatting with her that Hilary prides herself on creating delicious meals to suit any food preferences. In fact, the morning that I was there she made two separate soufflés: one dairy-free and one traditional. They were both rich and delicious!
You'll find the Avalon Bed & Breakfast at the end of a gently winding private drive banked by over arching trees, ferns and dappled sunlight, then just over the wooden bridge on Graton Road. And yes, it’s every bit as idyllic as it sounds.
