Taps Pub Taps into New Location in Petaluma
The beloved Taps Restaurant & Tasting Room closed Saturday Jan. 26, abandoning the space it has occupied on the first floor of Hotel Petaluma since 2009. But no worries: the watering hole will reopen January 31, 2014, just down the street in the former Riverside Bistro space on Washington Street, along the Petaluma River.
The reason for the move? Food. An aging venting system for the pub’s little kitchen broke down this summer, ending hot food service for the signature hot dogs, Italian beefs, wings, fries and such. The hotel at Washington and Kentucky streets dates back to the 1923, and the repairs needed were too costly for the neighborhood favorite bar that features some three dozen beers from around the world on tap.
Owner Eric Lafranchi made do by serving cold food, such as salads and deli sandwiches like the excellent smoked salmon with Nicasio Valley Foggy Morning cheese, tomato, cucumber, red onion and kalamata spread on Full Circle sprouted wheat.
But what his customers really wanted was the return of such hot delights as the BLT hot dog that brings a bacon-wrapped Miller's foot-long frank deep-fried, then dressed with lettuce, tomato and mayo.
Lafranchi is working on expanding the menu further, and in really good news for suds lovers, the new space will allow for a greater selection of beers, too.
