These Bakeries Take the Wedding Cake
A Sonoma County wedding can be the sweetest thing in the world, especially when you find the perfect bakery to make your wedding cake. Thanks to many local ingredients produced in Wine Country, from milk to eggs to chocolate, this can be the freshest, best-tasting cake you’ve ever enjoyed.
An important tip: Creating custom cakes takes time, and bakeries stay busy year-round. So please plan on ordering your cake up to six months in advance.
Patisserie Angelica, Sebastopol
Under the direction of sisters Condra Easley and Deborah Morris, this boutique shop specializes in all natural cakes that are works of art with elaborate designs. While wedding cakes are custom affairs designed to reflect each couples’ personalities, a bit of opulence can be always counted on.
That means classic cakes, like European rolled fondant towering in tiers gorgeously decorated with candy flowers, or traditional organic buttercream in multiple levels dressed in candy pearls, ribbons, and real flowers.
Whimsy is welcome, too. Perhaps the happy couple loves to travel the world, and would get a kick out of a passport theme, placed on a cake designed to look like a suitcase. Another fun idea is a pile of books for the avid reader couple, in edible titles like “Wedding Planning for Dummies” and “Love Poems.”
There are gluten free options, as well, such as The Cardinal Sin, a classic flourless chocolate cake made with Callebaut bittersweet chocolate, unsalted butter, pure cane sugar, and fresh eggs, then glazed with a luscious butter ganache and topped in hand-rolled chocolate shavings. Or, ask about vegan options.
In a unique twist, the bakery is also able to ship cakes. The sisters spent more than a decade developing cakes for venerable mail order catalogs like Dean & Deluca and Williams-Sonoma, and became experts in the details of matching cakes with the postal-Fed Ex service.
The duo previously worked in Aspen, where their clients included demanding types, too, with Hollywood celebrities like Kevin Costner, Cher, Lee Iacocca, Goldie Hawn, Michael Eisner, Richard Wagner, and Jill St. John.

Costeaux French Bakery & Café, Healdsburg
If a bakery has been open since 1923, as this one has, it has to be doing something right. One example of that is its complimentary consultation with the wedding cake planner. Next are the local, organic ingredients that made this boutique bakery first choice among Sonoma County’s dessert loving fans.
Then, there’s the diversity of the designs, with gorgeous tiered cakes that can also be surrounded with cookies, tarts, panforte, cheesecake, frangipane, pâte à choux, petit four, eclairs, truffles, and near-endless more sugary inspirations. And here’s a tasty bit of news: Costeaux can host your rehearsal dinner at its café, for a French feast with even more cakes.
