Guided Public Tour at Garden Valley Ranch

Nov. 2, 2018

Garden Valley Ranch, Petaluma, California

Every month, the Sonoma County Farm Trail group hosts guided tours of local farms, so visitors of all ages can explore the joys and challenges of agriculture and animal husbandry. For November, the spotlight is on this historic Victorian estate property that dates back to 1890. You'll admire more than 8,000 rosebushes planted on more than five acres of beautiful fields, alongside perennials, annuals and bulbs. The Secret Garden also displays a large koi pond, water fountains, and landscaped pergolas, columns and arches. You can also buy potted roses at the on-site Garden Store & Nursery. Tickets are $10.

Heritage Turkey Sunday Supper

November 4, 2018

Heritage Turkey Sunday Supper, Glen Ellen, California

It's a delicious party, but also a good cause, as the event raises funds to support the future of agriculture in Sonoma County, including the 4H kids who are raising the prize turkeys, Slow Food Russian River, Worth our Weight, and Sonoma County Farm Trails. Gather at Atwood Ranch in Glen Ellen, for the Farmyard Reception where you can meet the kids and their turkeys, and dozens of local chefs, purveyors, vintners and brewers. After a silent auction, you'll enjoy a multi-course dinner from top local chefs. And you can bid on a heritage turkey, too, for your own family feast. Tickets start at $100.

Details: 12099 Sonoma Hwy., Glen Ellen.

Salmon Creek Adventures

Year-round

Fall is a particularly good time to explore the Sonoma Coast, with treasures like Salmon Creek. This is a great place to splash down, since the beach is slightly inland in a lagoon, making the water warmer and calmer. Nearly two miles of sand make this an excellent place for surf fishing, beachcombing, and picnicking, while waves attract swimmers and surfers. The area is also home to the he western snowy plover, a bird listed under the Federal Endangered Species Act.

Lighting of the Snowmen

Dec. 1, 2018

Lighting of the Snowmen, Sonoma, California

The beloved annual event once turned into the launching of the snowmen, when the plastic characters were hurled across the highway by a slingshot into a vineyard. Another time, they were blown from a cannon. But it's all in fun, for the hundreds grinning fellows set up at Cornerstone shops and garden center. The day features pictures with Santa, hot chocolate, wine and beer tastings, kids' holiday crafts and games, food, and, of course, learning what will happen to the snowmen this time around. Admission is free; parking is $10.

Details: 23570 Arnold Drive, Sonoma, 707-933-3010.

Petaluma's Annual Gingerbread House Showcase and Competition

Dec. 7-9, 2018

Yum, the perfume of gingerbread, frosting and candies reminds us all that it's holiday season. A variety of these edible art pieces will be on display all weekend at Hotel Petaluma. You can enter your own architectural masterpiece, too, for prizes at the Sunday finale judging event. Admission is free.
