From the Waste Bin to the Runway: Trashion Fashion Returns to Sonoma
From Connecticut to MIT, “Trashion” is suddenly becoming all the rage. And, best of all, Trash Fashion is returning to Sonoma County in a very big way.
Referring to art, jewelry, fashion, and objects for the home created from used, thrown-out, found and repurposed elements, the term “trashion” was reportedly first coined in New Zealand in 2004 only to surge to popularity in 2005.
Nowadays, however, trashion is more than simply a searchable term or abstract concept. It is instead, a new and sustainable branch of the creative arts that has brought with it a fresh level of ingenuity and inspiration.
In celebration of all that innovation, what is perhaps the penultimately chic recycling event in America will make yet another appearance in Sonoma County beginning on March 18, 2017. With a shake, a shimmy and a whole lot of materials previously thought to have been completely and utterly disposable, Trashion Fashion Week is set to make a splash at the Sonoma Community Center as it celebrates the art of making something out of nothing.
Though the weeklong event, which runs through March 26, will include everything from a “101 Trashion Barbies” exhibit to “Dogs on the Catwalk,” a trashion fashion show for dogs, the undoubted highlight of the festivities will be the 2017 Trashion Fashion Runway Show. For this most unusual of catwalk presentations, guests will be treated to couture, not necessarily culled from the latest, most exotic fabrics, but instead from recycled materials.
Yep. You read that right.
In what some might describe as Project Runway – Landfill Edition, artists, designers, fashionistas, and ecologists are all being invited to dive into the nearest dumpster, refashion clothing from the thrift store, or create haute couture from materials found in a recycling bin. It’s the ultimate challenge and the results are simply stunning.
If you’re looking for a fashionable, artsy Saturday night in Sonoma, mark your calendars for March 25 and, as the models take to the runway, prepare to quote the inimitable RuPaul by shrieking “Sashay Shante … Shante … Shante … Shante …” at every turn.
