Yoga with Horses at Belos Cavalos
Ever danced with a horse? Neither have I, but when I found out that the Kenwood-based nonprofit “equine experiential” organization Belos Cavalos offered horse based wellness and yoga workshops, I knew I had to find out more.
Founded by Dr. Charlyn Belluzzo a global health leader, Belos Cavalos offers a variety of creative equine based programs, including: emotional and behavioral health, personal development and wellness, professional development, group education, and performance art and movement research.
On a recent visit I had the opportunity to meet with Dr. Belluzzo and visit with the resident herd of horses at Belos Cavalos.
Driving up to this beautiful property, it is immediately apparent that all the equine residents at Belos Cavalos receive five-star accommodations. A stunning barn layout and carefully designed landscape surrounds the enclosures where the horses happily spend their days when not at work with their human companions.
The herd ranges from retired polo ponies to former Thoroughbred racehorses and miniature horses that have braids in their hair and the sweetest of personalities. All of the horses are experienced in working with people and have lots of patience for even the most fearful of participants.
On a tour of the property, Dr. Belluzzo described Belos Cavalos’ wide range of creative offerings, including a recent bachelorette party hosted there, complete with “glamping” accommodations in the gorgeous meadow. The day began with sunrise yoga and went on to include a horse painting party, airplane ride (Belos Cavalos is home to a small plane), and wine tasting and lunch at neighboring St. Francis Winery & Vineyards. The event ended with a nighttime dance party in the meadow. Sounds like fun to me!
Wellness workshops give participants time to commune with the horses on several different levels, including, yes, dancing with them. Food, wine, music, and more are also emphasized, with a focus on awakening and nurturing the senses. Yoga alongside the horses is also a popular equine experience that is often incorporated into the wellness programs for a uniquely relaxing experience.
With all that is on offer at Belos Cavalos I was both surprised and very pleased that the heart of their equine programs are rooted in their work with children from the Valley of the Moon Children’s Center. Their Trauma-Informed Equine Experiential Program features horse art, meditative breathing, and carefully guided horse/child interactions.
Belos Cavalos is committed to helping those who have suffered trauma recover with the assistance of their equine companions and has designed some wonderful programs to meet this urgent need.
Upcoming programs at Belos Cavalos include a guided painting workshop on May 20, and a Summer Solstice event on June 24 with transformational leadership coach Christine Arylo and Erica Tom, director of arts and education at Belos Cavalos.
