Eliza Shepard – Strength and Service

Jack London Park Partners honors Women's History Month by exploring the life of Eliza Shepard, an extraordinary woman and the cherished stepsister of author Jack London. Eliza played a vital role in the success of Beauty Ranch, where she served as ranch manager, bookkeeper, and contractor, ensuring the smooth operation of Jacks beloved property.
Come and learn about Eliza Shepard! Beyond her support for Jack's work, Eliza was a trailblazer in her own right and an influential community leader. As an activist, she advocated for womens and veterans rights. She was a dedicated member of the Women's Relief Corps and worked to engage women in political action. Though she preferred to stay out of the limelight, Elizas no-nonsense approach to her work left an enduring legacy that continues to resonate today.
This event is presented by Elisa Stancil Levine, author of the book Jack London State Historic Park (available at the museum bookstore). Elisa has been researching Elizas life since 2005. As a volunteer at the park, I became captivated by Eliza's dedication, her history, and her remarkable character. Without Eliza, we wouldnt have the park we cherish today," Elisa said.
Light refreshments will be served after the event under the museum portico.
This event takes place on the second floor of the House of Happy Walls Museum and can be reached by stairway only. For more information about access, call 707-938-5216.
