Mosaics with Francesco Cafiso
Colori Viventi artist Francesco Cafiso invites you to join him for a journey into the ancient world of mosaics with an introductory workshop taking place over 2 intensive days (Sat-Sun), comprising of 10+ hours (10am-4pm) of course work. In this class you will explore design, learn to cut, adhere and grout the smalti, or glass pieces to make your own mosaic work of art. Francesco will open a door for you into an ancient art form and teach you the basic techniques that you can use to decorate your home, garden and more. For thousands of years, mosaics have been part of interior spaces. Their start can be traced back to primitive man’s simple arrangements of pebbles into patterns, describing a direction or message. These techniques gradually developed through history — from decorative floor and wall surfaces in villas and cathedrals to the modern expression of mosaics as art. From Sumeria and Mesepotomia, to Greco-Roman, Persian and Northern African cultures, mosaics have been an important part of art history and architecture. Instructor Francesco Cafiso has been teaching mosaic technique for almost 20 years. Classically trained in Italy, he has worked as a mosaic artist doing custom works of art and classical restoration in both Europe and North America. He now offers classes and workshops from his studio and exhibits locally in Northern California. Dates: April 30 – May 1, 2016, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. (take a bag lunch).
