Pre-Valentine's Primer with Johnny Mathis' The Voice of Romance Tour
What could be a better primer for Valentine’s Day 2017 than a romantic evening filled with the velvety song stylings of one of the most legendary voices in music? That is just what guests on hand at the Luther Burbank Center for the Arts in Santa Rosa can expect when Johnny Mathis’ Voice of Romance Tour swings through Wine Country on Saturday, February 11, 2017.
“There are a number of good singers, a smaller handful of truly great singers, and then there’s Johnny Mathis.”
- Barbra Streisand
Misty. Chances Are. Just the mention of those two classic evokes l’amour.
Known for his staggering six-decade long string of silky ballads, the out troubadour has performed for princes, presidents, first ladies and fans around the globe since his debut in 1954 at the age of 19. This year marks Mathis’ 61st year as a recording artist and his Voice of Romance Tour is an all-out celebration of the fact.
Not only will the show include the singer’s greatest hits, of which there are many given that he has sold over 350 million records – one of which spent a record-breaking 9-plus years on the charts – it will feature a legend whose music has made him the longest serving artist on Columbia Records as well as one of the very few out male vocal superstars in the business (even up until today).
Though he has never made coming out a significant part of his persona, Mathis did exactly that in a magazine article in the early 1980’s, trailblazing the way for Boy George, George Michael, Lance Bass and Ricky Martin all of whom would make similar announcements in splashier ways in the years after his revelation.
The balladeer, who would later recount having received death threats after the article, gave pause to any further revelations about his personal life thereafter, but he never stopped doing what he loves – singing. And that is perhaps why Mathis is also among the elite order of singers who have had hits in every decade of their career (for the record, there are just five in total including Barbra Streisand and Cher).
