Breweries, Distilleries and Cider Houses

Some of the best beer in the country comes from Sonoma County. Already known for premium wine, Sonoma County also offers a tasty choice to those who want an alternative or a complement to the traditional wine country experience. Local brewmasters are turning towards wheat and hops, creating a new California “Beer Country.” Notable breweries that are open to the public include Lagunitas Brewing Company (they even have a Beer Sanctuary), Russian River Brewing Company (home of Pliny the Younger (see release info for Feb 5, 2016), a beer that is almost Grail-like among serious hop-heads), St. Florian's Brewery in Windsor (Let's drink to the hero in all of us!) and Ruth McGowan's Brew Pub in the beautiful town of Cloverdale in Northern Sonoma County. Other places to quaff some suds include bars with large selections of local beers or venues that combine great food with live music like Hopmonk Tavern in Sebastopol and Barley and Hops in the west county village of Occidental. Beyond beer, Sonoma County has a noted distilling scene with gins (Spirit Works Distillery in Sebastopol), vodka (Sonoma Brothers in Windsor) and whiskeys (Prohibition Spirits in Sonoma town) produced at several distilleries around the region. And if cider is your style, then Tilted Shed Ciderworks in Windsor is worth a stop, or ask for a pint of local cider when you dine.
