The charm of Old Downtown Windsor and its Town Green will entice visitors to Sonoma County to explore one-of-a-kind shops. Boasting historic charm, the downtown area is actually a redevelopment project that began in 2001. Building exteriors are a nod to Windsor’s past and based on historic photos of the region. The new train station houses the visitor center, and will be one of the stops on the planned train connecting Sonoma and Marin counties. Though Windsor only became incorporated as a city in 1992, this hamlet’s rich history began long before then. Early Anglo settlers started buying land around the 1850s. In 1855, a Pony Express rider named the community because he thought it looked like the grounds surrounding Windsor Castle in England.
