The Perfect Staycation: Guerneville

Dawn Ranch, Guerneville

48 Hours of Wine, Dine, and Divine Relaxation in Sonoma County

“We in Sonoma!” I picked up this unofficial anthem when I swapped the hustle of San Francisco for the charm of Sonoma County before the pandemic. And what a move it was. Think: Incredible people, lush outdoors, world-class hospitality, and, of course, wine. Lots of wine. While my work as a journalist, content creator, and show host takes me around the globe, nothing beats coming home to Sonoma County. That’s why staycations here always feel like a mini slice of heaven.

This time, though, I needed more than a staycation – I needed “me time.” It’s been a year, to say the least. Transitioning from the corporate world (hello, steady paychecks) to small-business ownership, plus navigating life’s daily chaos? Yeah, it’s a grind. Self-care – mental, physical, spiritual – can easily fall by the wayside, and when you ignore it long enough, it starts showing. I caught a glimpse of myself recently and thought, “Big Head, no amount of fake Kool-Aid smiles is hiding that exhaustion.”

So, I hit the refresh button. Whether you’re driving up from San Jose or San Francisco, cruising down from Sacramento, hopping over from Oakland, or flying straight into STS, I’ve crafted the ultimate 48-hour Sonoma County reset. The formula? Wellness = Food + Wine + Blissful Relaxation. Let’s dive in.

Day 1: Blissful Relaxation in Guerneville at Dawn Ranch

Dawn Ranch, Guerneville

I’ve been kicking around Northern California for about a decade now. Back when I first got here, my knowledge of the area barely extended beyond San Francisco, San Jose, and Oakland. Fast forward 10 years, and I’ve hit up all kinds of spots around The Bay, but Sonoma County? That’s a whole other beast. Before you roast me for not knowing my own backyard, let me remind you: Sonoma County is roughly the size of Rhode Island. Sure, it’s the smallest state, but 1,500 square miles is no joke for a county. That’s a lot of ground to cover – and wine to sip.

This time, I wanted something familiar but not too familiar. Somewhere I could recharge my soul, get outside (but let’s leave camping to the hardcore folks), and stay within an arm’s reach of a good glass of wine. Enter Guerneville. I’d been before, but never long enough to really soak it in. I’d also read about this luxury resort that promises “approachable luxury,” heavy on the peace, light on the pretentiousness. Translation: No corporate jargon, no fake smiles, and no awkward sales pitches. Just a legit break, real people, and enough calm to work through life’s chaos. That’s how I ended up at Dawn Ranch – and let me tell you, it was exactly the vibe I needed.

Morning Bliss

8:30 a.m. – The Most Important Meal, Elevated

Since I live less than 45 minutes from Guerneville, I figured, why not start my day with breakfast at Dawn Ranch? Sure, check-in wasn’t until later, but that wasn’t stopping me from digging into some goodies at the resort’s restaurant – The Lodge. Lately, I’ve been trying to keep my eating habits in check (hello, “back nine” of my 40s), so I ordered the breakfast parfait – yogurt or chia pudding (I went chia, obviously), seasonal fruit, and homemade granola. I did consider a plate of bacon but decided not to tempt fate because I had a big day of what I like to call “Welln3ss” planned. That’s right – three different relaxation treatments. Why settle for one when you can have them all?

9:30 a.m. – Knead-to-Know Massage Session

My spa day kicked off at The Spa at Dawn Ranch with a massage designed to obliterate my stress. CBD oil? Check. Breathing through pain points? Check. Soulful tunes? Oh, absolutely. It was 60 glorious minutes of pure, stress-melting relief.

10:30 a.m. – Face It: Time for a Glow-Up!

traveler getting a facial at the spa at dawn ranch

Confession time: I didn’t have my first facial until 2019. Shocking, right? In my 20s, it was all about macho ignorance (“face moisturizer is for weaklings”), and in my 30s, I just didn’t think about it. Then, on a press trip, I got a facial because massages were fully booked. Life-changing. Ever since, it’s been a firm yes to facials – no “maybe” in my Maybelline! This time, my esthetician wasn’t just a pro; she was a healer, layering my skin with kindness, affirmations, and a honey-based concoction that smelled as sweet as it felt.

11:30 a.m. – Soak & Awaken

Baths at Dawn Ranch aren’t just baths – they’re an experience. Imagine sinking into cedarwood tubs, fragrant petals floating by, aromatic salts dissolving, and steam swirling around you. It’s like nature is giving you a big, warm hug. The redwood soaking tubs, inspired by the Japanese Ofuro tradition, are basically a love letter to relaxation. Under the tree canopy, it’s not just a bath – it’s a full-on sensory escape.

PRO TIP: Book a morning spa session, and poof! – your room will probably be ready way before check-in time. Coincidence? I don’t think so. Perfect for anyone rolling in early, especially if you’ve been on a long flight. Trust me, you’ll thank me later.

Afternoon Exploration

12:15 p.m. – Spa Check-out, Spa Cottage Check-in

After my treatments, I felt like I was floating – but luckily, I didn’t have to float far. My new digs for the next couple of days were just steps away: The dreamy Spa Cottage. Picture this: A private patio and deck with a gas firepit, an outdoor redwood Euro-style soaking tub (because why not?), a spacious living room complete with a wet bar and half bath, and a double-sided gas fireplace cozily shared between the living room and bedroom. Oh, and let’s not forget the luxurious king bedroom with an en-suite master bathroom. Basically, it’s paradise wrapped in four walls … and firepits. I had to do a quick wardrobe change into my Wine Country chicness as I was heading to a wine tasting. So, I steamed my blazer and pants in the shower, picked out a brooch to charm my wine host into an extra pour, and dusted off the Air Force 1’s.

1 p.m. – A Grape Escape to Gary Farrell Winery

Right on cue, my driver rolled up to Dawn Ranch. Stepping out with a smile, he said, “I’m Paul from Pure Luxury Transportation,” before opening the door to a sleek Lincoln Aviator. Pure Luxury and I go way back – we first crossed paths at a Sonoma County Vintners event, and I’ve been a fan of the polished service and impressive fleet ever since. Needless to say, I was thrilled the company would be chauffeuring me on today’s wine-filled adventure.

As we cruised through the picturesque Russian River Valley toward Gary Farrell, Paul and I struck up a lively chat. By the time we arrived, we’d already bonded over two important things: A mutual love of wine and the shared glory of being East Coast natives. Clearly, great wine and good conversation make any journey fly by.

1:30 p.m. – Gary Farrell Winery Adventure: Sip Happens Here

visitor meeting the wine maker at gary farrell vineyards and doing a wine tasting
Gary Farrell Vineyards & Winery, Healdsburg

I’ll challenge anyone to deny that Gary Farrell Vineyards and Winery offers the best wine-and-views combo in Sonoma County. The moment I arrived, I was greeted by Gabe Brezic, the estate sommelier, with a warm handshake in one hand and a glass of Chardonnay in the other.

As someone who spends a lot of time tasting, analyzing, and writing about wine, I’m always ready to geek out. But this time, I wanted something different. I told Gabe, “Let’s skip the wine talk for now – this is my wellness weekend. I’d rather hear your story.” Then I’d share mine. My plan? By the time we got through the flight of two Chardonnays and three Pinot Noirs, we’d be friends. Spoiler: We were.

Gary Farrell is one of those wineries I always recommend as one of my favorite wine spots. And my afternoon with Gabe was a perfect reminder of why: It’s not just the wine, though it’s phenomenal; it’s moments like sitting outside in perfect 70-degree weather, engaging in meaningful conversation, and soaking in the simple, underrated joys of life.

Here’s the thing: You can teach someone how to pour wine, memorize regions, and master theory, but you can’t teach genuine human connection. Gabe brought more to the table than exceptional wine – he brought an unforgettable experience. Thank you, Gabe, for reminding me that wine is so much more than what’s in the glass. Cheers to great wine, great views, and great company!

Evening Elegance

3:30 p.m. – Arrival Back at Dawn Ranch

When I wine walked out of Gary Farrell, I was all smiles – smiles that only got bigger when Paul quipped, “I see you had a good time.” Holding up my six bottles, I shot back, “Looks that way, doesn’t it?” Once we wrapped up the ride, I thanked Paul for the smooth trip and great conversation because few things pair better with wine than good banter. Pure Luxury has been keeping Wine Country classy and safe for more than 30 years, and the company never disappoints. Oh, and Paul casually mentioned how much he and his wife love Pinot Noir, so I made sure to leave him two bottles. Sharing is caring, especially among fellow East Coasters! Cheers, Paul!

4 p.m. – Nap Time & Refresh

I’m a sucker for a good nap, and that king-size bed was practically shouting my name. Sleep isn’t just beauty rest – it’s mental health’s secret weapon. Quality Zzz’s keep your mood in check, your brain sharp, and your emotional chaos at bay. On the flip side, bad sleep? It’s like giving an open invite to stress and anxiety.

Of course, I set an alarm – because there’s no way I’m missing out on that rain shower and some quality time in the rocking chair on the deck before dinner. What song did I queue up? Gwen McCrae’s “Rockin’ Chair.” I know, I know, judge me all you want – I’m an absolute delight!

6 p.m. – Fine Dining Under the Redwoods in Guerneville

dinner at the lodge at dawn ranch meeting the chef
The Lodge at Dawn Ranch, Guerneville

I’m a proud, unapologetic foodie – and honestly, why wouldn’t I be? Food isn’t just about taste (though let’s be real, it’s a big reason). It’s a time machine to past memories and a universal language that everyone speaks fluently. Unlike awkward small talk, food brings people together and introduces cultures in ways words just can’t. I mean, every living thing eats, right? Unless you’re a zombie – then, well, that’s a different kind of food discussion.

My love for the language of food led me straight to The Lodge at Dawn Ranch, where chefs Juliana Thorpe and Ignacio Zuzulich helm the kitchen. This married duo – she with her Brazilian flair, he with Argentinian soul – had my tastebuds eager to tango. After skimming the menu, loaded with tempting à la carte options, I chose the tasting menu because, honestly, why settle for one dish when you can sample the whole orchestra?

My server asked if I wanted a wine pairing and if I had any allergies. I replied, “Yes to the pairing, and I’m only allergic to bad wine.” She got the joke because moments later, a dapper gentleman strolled over, introduced himself as Genaro Gallo Escudero, the wine director, and said, “I hear you’re allergic to bad wine. [Laughing] Don’t worry, that won’t be an issue here.” Touché, Genaro.

The tasting menu was a culinary love letter to my palate.

Halfway through, Chef Ignacio emerged from the kitchen, and I invited him to sit for a moment. After all, a meal this good under the redwoods deserves some company. He graciously joined me, and I couldn’t resist asking, “So, do you have any pull around here to get us some wine?” With a smirk, he replied, “I know a guy.” Cue Genaro, swirling over with bottles in hand. Thankfully their jobs are some of the few positions where drinking on the job is allowed. The three of us raised our glasses and toasted to phenomenal food, exceptional wine, and the kind of company that makes every bite and sip unforgettable.

Day 2: Pool Floaties & Chill Vibes in Sonoma County

Morning: Float, Sip, Repeat

9 a.m. – Rise-and-Shine Soak Session

Staying in the Spa Cottage with an outdoor bath meant one thing – I had to kick off my morning by recreating yesterday’s dreamy soak. This time, I upped the game with a steaming cup of Earl Grey brewed in my kitchen. Nothing says “I’m winning at mornings” like soaking in a bath, fully awake to the soundtrack of rustling trees and chirping birds. Peak cottagecore vibes, achieved.

10 a.m. – Rise and Dine: Breakfast with a View at Dawn Ranch Lodge

It was much sunnier today, so I decided to do breakfast on the deck of The Lodge. Sunset dinner was fantastic the previous night, but I wanted to enjoy a meal with some rays. Not to mention I wanted a primer for my skin considering today was a pool day. I ordered and moved quickly as I wanted to get max pool time in.

Perfecting My Summer Glow at Dawn Ranch

11 a.m. – Poolside, Because Vitamin D is My BFF

Noel having a pool day at dawn ranch
The pool at Dawn Ranch, Guerneville

I was born with a natural talent for lounging by a pool or beach all day. Some people can’t handle it, but me? I’m a professional. Just give me a podcast, a magazine, or my Yacht Rock Playlist and I’m set. Armed with SPF, a spa robe, and my trusty chancletas, I made my way to the newly spruced-up pool area. Naturally, I started in the hot tub – because prepping your body for poolside wine consumption is a serious ritual.

Now, bottles aren’t allowed in the pool area, but full (plastic) glasses of wine? Totally fair game. So, I poured myself a Gary Farrell Pinot Noir – the perfect poolside companion, handpicked by Gabe himself when I casually asked which bottle pairs best with floating around aimlessly to Yacht Rock. I tucked my wine under my lounger, slid into a floatie, and let Christopher Cross, Michael McDonald, and Lionel Richie serenade me as I did slow, lazy circles in the water for hours.

Feeling more adventurous than lazy? Grab a kayak and paddle along the Russian River’s peaceful curves or hit the trails through the towering redwoods. But honestly, why hike when you can float with a Pinot?

3 p.m. – Nap Time

I could go into this again but it’s pretty much the same as the day before with the exception of mid-day snoring and puddles of drool on my pillow.

5 p.m. – Grub and Dash Dinner

The Lodge is closed two days during the week but there are plenty of grab-and-go options onsite and more within walking distance in downtown Guerneville. I grabbed a light sandwich because honestly, with yoga coming up later, sitting down for a full tasting might have produced unwanted bodily functions. While my session would include sound therapy, I don’t know if gaseous sounds constitute “healing harmonies.”

Unwind O’Clock

6 p.m. – Stretch, Zen, and Gong: Evening Yin Yoga Meets Sound Bliss

Led by the incredible MK Mccartney, this isn’t your average yoga class – it’s a full-on relaxation reboot. Get ready for a floor-based Yin yoga practice paired with a restorative gong bath that’ll have you feeling like a Zen master in no time. Think deep stretches (held for 3-5 minutes) to boost flexibility and focus, followed by sound waves from the gong that’ll melt your stress faster than a popsicle on a summer day. All levels welcome – no pretzel poses required.

After class, I sat down with MK to spill the tea on my stress-packed life. She didn’t just listen; she hit me with bonus breathing techniques and a few private words (about the struggles and triumphs in both our lives) that were somehow as restorative as the class itself. Game. Changer.

Complimentary for Dawn Ranch guests – score! Pre-registration required, mats provided. Open to the community too. Don’t miss out!

Post-Dinner – Dessert? Let’s S’more It by the Firepit

Noel making smores at dawn ranch firepit
The firepits at Dawn Ranch in Guerneville

My last night at Dawn Ranch, and the firepit presented two options: Channel my inner Yellowjackets cast member and dance around it dramatically or go into full marshmallow mode with S’mores. I went with the latter, because who can say no to gooey, sugary goodness? Not exactly a wellness retreat snack, but hey, relaxation calories don’t count, right? (At least that’s what I’m telling myself.)

Staring into the flickering fire, I got lost in the embers … until I inevitably burned my marshmallows. Again. I swear, I have a talent for taking them from golden perfection to charred disaster in record time.

Despite my marshmallow mishaps, I managed to salvage a few edible creations and sit under the stars for some deep life contemplation. It was the perfect way to end 48 hours of indulgence and pure chill. Who knew slightly burnt marshmallows and a firepit could feel this majestic?

Final Thoughts

Sonoma County is your golden ticket to unplug, unwind, and reboot like a pro. In just 48 hours, I soaked up a perfect cocktail of wellness, luxury, and good vibes – all served with a dash of that unmistakable Californian charm. Foodie? Wine enthusiast? Thrill-seeker? Professional napper? Whatever your vibe, Guernevlle’s got it covered.
