29th Annual Día de los Muertos Exhibition Opening

El Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is a holiday celebrated in Mexico, many Central and South American countries, and across the United States. Rooted in ancient tradition, it is a joyous remembrance of the lives of family members and loved ones who have died and a celebration of the cycle of life.
Day of the Dead is observed Nov. 1 and 2. Traditionally, these days are marked by festive gatherings to honor the deceased. Cemeteries are cleaned and decorated, special foods and candies are prepared, and home altars (ofrendas) are created with offerings of food, drink, music, and other items enjoyed by loved ones in life.
This years exhibition explores both the deep traditions and contemporary expressions of Day of the Dead. Altars and artworks will be designed by Jesús Bravo, Rubén Guzmán, Nathan Gomez, and other artists. A community altar, which visitors may contribute to, will be created by the museum in collaboration with Liz Camino-Byers and her collection of Mexican art and craft.
