Community Compost Workshop

Sonoma Ecology Center, Sonoma County Ag + Open Space, and Compost Depot invite you to a hands-on compost adventure at Sonoma Garden Park, where we’ll explore the essential role of composting in building healthier soils and thriving gardens. Together, we’ll demystify the microbiology of the compost process, get our hands dirty building compost, use microscopes to observe beneficial soil biology, and make a soil scientist out of everyone—one pile at a time!

Our workshop leader is Bobby Nicholson, Soil Health Scientist and founder of Compost Depot. Through onsite, in-school, and community programs, Bobby makes soil science accessible to everyone, sharing practical tools for building healthy soils and healthy minds.

Perfect for gardeners, nature enthusiasts, and curious learners of all ages, this family-friendly workshop is designed for all experience levels. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced gardener, you’ll walk away with valuable knowledge about composting, soil health, and practical tips to improve your own garden’s vitality. The compost program at Sonoma Garden Park is collaboratively stewarded by Sonoma Ecology Centers teen EnviroLeaders and Compost Depot, providing a living educational tool for garden park visitors of all ages to learn and benefit from.

This workshop is FREE of charge thanks to the voters of Sonoma County, who fund the work of Ag + Open Space with a quarter cent sales tax.
