Focus Night: Lunar Eclipse

Join us for a special evening program designed to prepare you for the eclipse before it happens. This Focus Night features an engaging presentation on what causes a lunar eclipse, what to look for when it unfolds in the early morning, and how past cultures interpreted this striking celestial event. You’ll head home with everything you need to fully appreciate the eclipse from your own backyard when it appears hours later.

The evening begins with an engaging, easy-to-follow presentation that explains what causes a lunar eclipse and why the Moon can appear red during totality. You’ll learn how Earth, the Moon, and the Sun align to create this phenomenon, what stages to watch for as the eclipse progresses, and how ancient cultures interpreted and mythologized these rare events. We’ll also cover practical viewing tips so you know exactly what to look for when the eclipse occurs in the early morning hours.

Please note: the actual lunar eclipse will take place several hours later, in the early morning, after the observatory has closed. This event is designed to prepare and excite you for what you’ll see later that night rather than observe the eclipse live. You’ll leave with a clear understanding of when to watch, how to view it best, and why it is happening.

Following the presentation, our knowledgeable docents will guide you through telescope viewing of other celestial objects visible that evening, offering an opportunity to explore the night sky while building anticipation for the eclipse ahead.
