Focus Night: Saturn

The Saturn Focus Night invites you to spend an evening with the jewel of the night sky, sixth planet from the sun, right when it is best positioned for viewing from Sonoma County. As part of our Focus Night series, this program highlights a single celestial target, offering a thoughtful and immersive way to experience one of the most beloved sights in astronomy.

The evening begins with an engaging, easy-to-follow presentation about Saturn. You’ll learn what makes this gas giant so remarkable, from its dazzling ring system and over 140 moons to its unusual density and dynamic atmosphere. You’ll learn why Saturn’s rings are disappearing, explore Saturn’s place in mythology and the long history of human fascination with its rings—from Galileo’s first puzzling observations to modern spacecraft discoveries.

After the presentation, we head to the telescopes to observe Saturn firsthand. Through RFO’s telescopes, Saturn’s rings often appear clearly separated from the planet’s golden disk, and you may spot some of its brightest moons nearby. For many visitors, this is a “wow” moment—seeing Saturn’s rings with your own eyes is an experience that never fails to amaze.

Whether you’re discovering Saturn for the first time or returning for another look, Saturn Focus Night offers a chance to slow down, look closely, and connect with one of the most stunning objects in the night sky. Join us for an evening that blends science, history, and pure wonder under the Sonoma County stars.
